Gary Cole update

Gary Cole did two TV pilots for the 2001/2002 season, a one hour drama and a half-hour comedy. Now www.garycole.net reports on the rather mixed results:

1) The Agency, a dramatic series about the CIA, has been picked up by CBS. But Cole's character from the pilot is not among the series regulars. Instead the character will carry over into a story arc that cover a limited number of episodes.

2) Neurotic Tendencies, a sitcom produced and directed by Frasier star Kelsey Grammer, wasn't picked up for a Fall slot, but Grammer says he is confident it will go as a mid-season replacement. The article does not mention a network.

In the pilot Cole co-starred with DeeDee Pfieffer (Michelle's sister) as a Hollywood producer who is happy to become involved with a woman who isn't part of the industry - "but everything is not as it seems." Whatever that means. (I hope it isn't about his wife/girlfriend trying to get into the business every week. That's been done before. It was called I Love Lucy.

)

(Or maybe I should hope that this is the premise, as it seems likely to crash and burn in a couple of years at most, which would free Cole up in time for the possible return of Crusade.

BTW, thanks for the info!

Mixed feelings. Good to see Gary working again on a larger scale, bad to see that he's not available for Crusade (at least not yet...).

The Agency, according to an issue of TV Guide, is scheduled for 10 pm Thursday time slot, which is normally hotly contested (think "ER"). But the only other major contender there is PrimeTime thursday, so it's up in the air.

And we all know the volatility of sitcoms... Look at how many didn't survive the last season.

So, it may work out, may not, but I wouldn't bet against them not being continued after their first season.

Ivanova: No sir, wouldn't dream of it.
Sheridan: Good, I hate being cheered up. It's depressing.
Ivanova: So in that case we're all going to die horrible, painful, lingering deaths.
Sheridan: Thank you, I feel so much better now.

You ever seen Office Space or either of the Brady Bunch movies? Not that the movies themselves were all that great (I liked Office Space though). Gary Cole had me cracking up impersonating Michael Brady. Other than those three movies, I can't think of any other comedy he's been in.

I did my best to avoid the Brady movies.

However, Office Space makes me curious. Hmmm, better scan through the TV Guide to see if it's on anytime this week ...

Mixed feelings here as well. I really thought that Cole brought Gideon to life -- and that Gideon's character was by far the best starship captain character I've ever seen on tv (Kirk included). I would like nothing more than to see Crusade renewed with Cole as Gideon.

Understanding is a three-edged sword.

Much as I like Gary Cole, he doesn't seem to have much luck with series, does he? Okay, Midnight Caller lasted, what, three series? But since then there's been American Gothic (one season) and Crusade (half a season). Hopefully someone can point out to me that his record is rather better! I don't think that any of this is down to Cole, just that his luck doesn't seem great!
smile.gif
In fact, the only person of comparable talent that I can think of with worse luck in series television is Eric Close, with Dark Skies (one season), The Magnificent Seven (one season) and Now and Again (one season)

I totally agree! No Cole, no Gideon. Cole played that part so well.

On another Cole update, I know he did a movie called, 'One Hour Photo.' Listed on the imdb. Stars Robin Williams. About a photo lab worker who gets obessed with a customer's family.

Back in the '60s and '70s various networks tried to build sitcoms around two men who were always big hits as guest stars on other people's shows: Tim Conway and Don Rickles. None of them ever worked, but between them they went through so many failed pilots and shows that they started joking about the Rickles and Conway curses. I think they once had an argument over who had the most failed series on The Tonight Show, but there were so many they started to lose track.

At one point Conway's California license plate read: "13 Wks" for how long most of his shows went before they were cancelled. (In those days a network that made a deal for half-a-season actually aired a show for half-a-season before pulling the plug, which let a lot of shows that got off to a rocky start build an audience and survive. Now they look at the overnight ratings for two or three weeks and make their decision.)

So I suspect that one of these two gents holds the actual record.

Feh, I hate sitcoms. a blight on an already bleak wasteland of mindless entertainment and meaningless T&A...

Lennier, "and?"
Marcus, "I'm not repressed anymore."

In regards to the comedy thing... that's actually something I have an interest in, becuase Ira Steven Behr (DS9 executive producer) is involved. I didn't know Gary was too.

Thanks to Mr de Martino for his bit on TV history - I really love all that trivia

Must be why I studied the stuff, huh? And glad that there are others even more unlucky than Messers Cole and Close

I saw Office Space today, with Gary in. I've been meaning to watch it for a while. But it was on, and I watched it! It was a good film. It seemed to have a bit of an identity crisis, and I'm not sure about it overall. But I liked it. Gary was superb in it! He's a great actor.

I must confess I wasn't crazy about Gary Cole at first, it took me three or four episodes to get used to him. However, I now think he's a 'natural' compared to Kevin Sorbo on Andromeda.

Please, Sorbo fans, don't hit me

For those interested, Gary Cole will have some voice over work on the 2nd episode of the resurrected show "The Family Guy"

Gary Cole (Gideon-Crusade)

Family Guy
Brian Does Hollywood
Wednesday, 18 9:30 PM EST Fox
Brian heads to Hollywood to be screenwriter and the others follow when
Stewie is chosen to be on "Kids Say the Darndest Things." Stewie
doesn't exactly hit it off with host Bill Cosby but Brian does make
his mark in show business, if not in the way he had intended (as a
porn "auteur"). Guest voices include Ray Liotta and adult stars Jenna
Jameson and Ron Jeremy (as themselves). Michael Eisner: Gary Cole.

BTW, I'm so glad to see The Family Guy back! http://www.fox.com/familyguy/index.html
It was best animated cartoon on T.V. IMHO, and after being off the air for about 18 months, it's good to see it back with all new episodes!

Must supress rage.

I liked the Family Guy, especially Stewie. Oddly enough the one character I didn't like was the title character.

I will assume you forgot the Simpsons and will try to forgive you. For now.

Yes, Simpsons reign supreme. Family Guy is a cheap but adequate substitute.
Cole's gonna do the voice of Eisner! That's great.

***Warning: the following will only make sense to those who've seen Office Space***

When I see Gary Cole, the first thing I think of is Office Space, not Crusade. I could barely take him seriously on Crusade because I would think of him having sex, with Jennifer Aniston's foot in one hand and a coffee mug in the other; then I crack up. I start to imagine silly dialogue:
"Yee-eah, if you could just fire the forward guns, yee-eah, that would be great"

------------------
"You do not make history. You can only hope to survive it."

Though the Simpsons were great and it's one of my favorite shows ever, the last few years have been deluted when compared to earlier years....
IMHO, the show just keeps getting worse year by year....

------------------
"Faith Manages"

The latter Simpsons seem to be mostly a series of bad jokes slapped together with no attempt at including a plot.

Fourtunatley, there's Futurama, which is everything Simpsons once was, and a bit more.
