b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

Ok how does one go about getting these books. They are no longer in print and to purchase them used they are something like $25 which is rediculous. I just finished the centauri trilogy and someone mentionedi should read "to dream..." next then "shadow within" then read the technomage trilogy. I can get the technomage trilogy now but i'd like to read it in an order that makes sense. What should i do? Should i read the technomage trilogy now and when they begin to reprint the others (i think in november) read those? SHould i wait? Should i buy them used?

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

"To Dream in the City of Sorrows" is still available at Amazon.co.uk - that's where I got my copy from. It's currently at £3.99 (less than $7.00) and used copies start at £2.00 - in other words, far less than the $25.00 you mentioned (which is ridiculous, I agree) even with postage.

"Shadow Within" is one book I haven't been able to find. Apparently you could check e-Bay or half.com (since neither is of any use to me, I haven't looked there) but I suppose that waiting until it's reprinted is a more sensible option.

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

that's weird it's not available in america. Man america sucks /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif J/K Go USA. ole .... ole ole ole, ole... ole

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

wow checked half.com for the shadow within... someone is trying to sell it for 40. That's rediculous. Sucks to their asmar

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

First of all, it is not necessary to read "The Shadow Within" before the technomage books but it might enhance the story a bit. I read it after the first technomage book and thought it was OK but not great (I liked the TM trilogy much better). It might have made a better read before the trilogy or for someone not familiar with Shadow technology. *shrug*

I think "To Dream..." could be read at any time and has no relation to any of the trilogies. It is about Sinclair and his time spent on Minbar. An excellent read. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

Now about the book availability ...

The good news is that "The Shadow Within" is being reprinted and will be available in Nov 2002. It is available for pre-order at eBay that aren't too bad of a price ... right now at least. /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Like Kribu said, has "To Dream ..." for a reasonable price still. Alternately, I found one auction on <a target="_blank" href=http://www.qksrv.net/click-921088-5463217?loc=http%3A//cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D1541843344>eBay as well.

BTW, try visiting my B5 pages for more books, reviews and locations to purchase. /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

I found copies of the old books last year at a used book store. Try those.

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

I got lucky one day and found The Shadow Within at my local Barnes and Noble unfortunately didn't find To dream in the city of sorrows guess I will wait till it gets reprinted .

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

To Dream is still in some stores if you're in America. I got mine in an ordinary regular mall Waldenbooks. Make some calls.

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

Is it possible that your local library (or college/uni library) might have them? You could at least read them while you are waiting to find copies that you could buy.

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

Del Rey Books is reprinting all of the old Dell novels, starting with The Shadow Within this November. The second book they're reprinting is To Dream in the City of Sorrows. These were the two most-requested titles, so that's where Del Rey is starting. No publication date has been announced for To Dream, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it out early in 2003, maybe even December 2002.

So it seems sensible to wait a few months for brand new editions rather than buy used copies, especially at some of the inflated prices mentioned here.

Joe

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

sweet thanks for your replies. i will go ahead and get the technomage trilogy and start on that. woohoo i can't wait.

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

Have B5 novels becomes collectors items or something? $25 for a used book? I once saw one of the B5 novels for $25 but that was a new one!
It isn't easy to get B5 books here. Only a few bookshops sold them when B5 was on. One was a bookshop that specialised is slightly unusual books. Another was a bookshop that sold comics, graphic novels and niche genre magazines that don't have a big enough market for mainstream booksellers to find worth their while stocking.
I did buy a few B5 novels, and have kept them. I have never seen one secondhand, ever. Infact, I've only a couple of times seen B5 videos secondhand.

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

Did you check on the $5.25 copy of "The Shadow Within" that I told you about?

While it's not absolutely necessary to read "The Shadow Within" before the Technomage trilogy, it's preferable if you read "The Shadow Within" first.

It's called "supply and demand". The books have been out of print for years in the States, while the number of B5 fans has grown since the show went out of production. That adds up to a lot more fans chasing a lot fewer copies - hence the high prices for the small number of books that are offered for sale. (I own both, but I'm not interested in selling either of them. Although maybe I should rethink that. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif)

They're not "collector's items" per se, but a lot of people do want to read at least Shadow Within and To Dream, and the only way to do that at the moment is to buy secondhand copies. I suspect a lot of the eBay books are being sold by people who know that they'll be able to buy new copies soon, and are trying to make a few bucks off those who don't know about Del Rey's plans or are very impatient. This happens all the time with DVDs. People who follow the industry know well in advance when a film is going to be re-issued as a special edition, so they auction off their old copy of an out-of-print title an eBay for more than it cost, and use the money later to buy the SE. (The less scrupulous will say that a title is OOP even when it isn't, in order to drive up the price.)

Joe

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

I won't read the Technomage trilogy because I want my own conception of Sheridan and the B5 series to remain the same.

"To Dream..." should be read, though... it answers a lot of questions.

Channe, your avatar rocks!!!! /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

I have read both To Dream and Shadow Within, and I think they are the best of the 9 numbered novels.

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

Thanks! /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

To Dream... is a good book.

Re: b5 books \"shadow within\" and \"to dream...\"

I did but unfortunately it would have added another $6 of shipping charges. I'll just wait till it comes out again. It's ok. i remember reading the foundation novels by asimov in the wrong order. It was kind of cool looking back and associating things between novels that i didn't understand before. Same with b5.

I really think that's a mistake. You needn't worry about your conception of Sheridan and the B5 series changing very much as a result of reading this trilogy. Others have blown things way out of proportion in this regard.

IMHO, TLaDiS did a <u>lot</u> more damage my own conception of the B5 series than anything in the three trilogies has.
