Ruined even further

Sure, just go to any Star Wars board and you will see guys chomping at the bit to get their hands on this set.

I'm now offically a jaded ex-lucas fanboy, and regretting my handle....

I'll hold on to my VHS versions for now. I might also start looking around for bootleg internet copies -- I saw a version of ESB that was actually quite high-quality.

I'll be doing the same thing. There's no way in hell I'll be buying the doctered versions.

What is really annoying is that it works. People flocked to buy the originals, then flocked again to buy the doctored versions.

Can you really blame a guy who doesn't really look at this as art, but as business?

Yes.

Ok, I wanted that last post to be just what it was, so I'll continue here.

Just wanted to warn you all, that what you're getting in this DVD release isn't even all of it. He is still planning the Ulimate Edition which will entail even more alterations and changes.

Can't you all see? He's turning the OT into the same kind of films the PT are. It's DNA replacement. "Digital Negative Alterations." :D

If anyone knows of good rips from the Laserdiscs from which I can burn my own DVD's of the OT, original cuts, email me. Or...something. Please. :(

They are *his* movies. He can do whatever he wants with them. All this bitching and moaning is pointless. Say what you want, but the 70's special effects royally sucked, old fans would buy the original trilogy but certainly the kids and future fans that have been introduced with the phantom menace and AOTC (me) would never buy that crap. We would think Lucas ran out of money after Episode III or something. Either make the movies consistent, or the original trilogy doesn't exist in my mind.

Fas, it's not the updating of the special effects thbat bothers people, it the complete changing (Like taking the original Darth Vader actor's ghost out, and painting over it with the actor playing Anakin. Which doesn't make sense anyways, since Darth Vader would be considerably older than the actor playing Anakin in the Prequel Trilogy)

And to be honest, the special effects of the original Star Wars films were way ahead of their time, so the effects are not as dated as you might think.

I actually got some bootleg DVD's of the original from ebay. They're great quality and just the way I remember seeing them as a kid. If you do decide to get some off of ebay be sure they are the originals and not the special editions, as both versions are out there.

So, is GL going to delete the scene where Darth Vader takes off his mask or re-do that scene with the younger Anakin to fit the redone ghost scene? It doesn't make sense.

It sure as hell bothers me. If young people can't watch a film in the context of its time, that's their damn problem. Fortunately, most of us don't think that way. My 18 yr old sister watches old movies in *gasp* black & white with the rest of the family. My favorite film of all time is 2001: A Space Odyssey, released 9 yrs before my birth.

The idea of making the old movies, which are about Jedi and space aliens, look like the new ones to make it "believable" is absurd. We all know they were made 25 yrs apart.

Yes it's HIS films and he can do whatever he wants. And it's my money and I can do whatever I want, like not paying for that shit.

Don't worry, if you want to disagree with me, you could always start a discussion in the NC-17 forum. Get me talking about strippers, porn, fantasizing during sex, fake boobs, and marriage and I'm sure you'll shake your fist at me in rage again.

Sexism and misogyny would be a great start there. ;)

I actually venture into NC17 very rarely.

It's the boy's playground. :p
It serves my blood pressure well to avoid it most of the time.

It's been mostly quiet and boring in there recently. You're more likely to nap than have an aneurism.

I have no problem with GL changing what he wants. All I ask is to let us have the movies the way we remember them. If he wants to keep going and make Han become Luke and Leias's older brother, and Jabba's nephew, then sobeit. At this point, I assume that Chewbacca created the Death Star.

They are not just *his* movies anymore. He does own them in the legal sense, but those movies have long since become a part of our culture and now he's changing them!

I wouldn't mind him doing an updated version if he also included the orignal version either via seamless branching or as a sperate package. Heck if he offered both versions I'd probably buy both.

But I can't entirely forgive him for messing with the movies I saw as a kid. Like for many others Star Wars holds (or perhaps held) a special meaning for me. Lucas has more or less destroyed that.

Well, you paid a few bucks to watch the originals in the theatre years ago. You got your VHS. That's all he owes you and promised you. He isn't mother teresa. Honestly I don't think Lucas gives a damn about anyone's opinion but himselfs. And Samuel L. Jackson's: he got his purple lightsaber after all ;)

Seriously, if you feel like your childhood has been raped or something... that's pretty sad, but the truth is the new generation of fans won't give a damn about changes. And I think they are most pretty neat. Except for greedo shooting first. That's fucking stupid.

As for Anakin... well, it connects it to the pequel trilogy... and of course that was him before he fell to the darkside. Hell i'm sure half the older Darth Vader's body was destroyed when he fell into the lava.

Most of the younger folks I've talked to think changing it is stupid, so I guess it's different for everybody. I'm still mad at Ted Turner for colorising old films, and that happened before I was old enough to know what was going on.

Am I the only one who thinks "how pathetic"? Most people in the entertainment industry either retire or create new material.

Wow, dude, I totally don't remember that the first time I saw these films. :p
