CNN\'s Thompson Takes Up with Psychics

See CNN's Thompson Takes Up with Psychics

I sent the writer the following:

Actually, FIRST Andrea Thompson was on "Babylon 5" for TWO YEARS, and her character was a member of "The Psi Corps." This happened before she ever went to "Blue."

Once again, Babylon 5 is left out.

Re: CNN\'s Thompson Takes Up with Psychics

And don't forget her guest role in that one ep of Quantum Leap as a reporter in Vietnam!

And they left out B5? Has the world gone MAD?! Wait.... perhaps it has.

No, but to the world, nothing exists but mainstream. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Actually FIRST Andrea Thompson was born, then she went to school, then she had various jobs while trying to make it as an actress, then she probably did theatrical roles, TV commercials and guest shots before she got B5...

The article wasn't a biography, or filmography, just a blurb about a new show. The writer started with the first thing that most readers would likely remember her from. If you're just finding out that B5 was an obscure genre show that 90% of America never heard of, you are a bit late.

Yes, but given the content of the new that they were introducing, I think that a mention of her two years playing a telepath "before you saw her on NYPD Blue" might have made sense.

And a fair number of people might also remember her from JAG between the B5 and NYBD:B jobs.

1) That assumes the reporter was aware of B5 and Andrea's role in the series.

2) The reader wouldn't have known of the show, the role or what "telepath" meant in that context, so why bother?

3) Telepathy as portrayed in B5 has exactly nothing to do with "psychic" investigators and their bogus "visions" or where missing persons are. ("I see a body of water, a lake or a river...") So Andrea's playing Talia was no more relevant to this story than any of her other pre-Blue parts.

Re: CNN\'s Thompson Takes Up with Psychics

You have to remember that print journalism is concerned with economy. At the moment, there are two questions taped to my monitor:

"So what?"
"Who cares?"

So what that she was on B5? Who cares? The article's not about this.

To add B5 would be to explain what the word "telepath" meant, which would have had no bearing to the rest of the article, which had to do with something else entirely, like it was said above.

And with short articles like this, every word counts.

NYPD Blue was most relevant. Everyone knows what the word "cop" means. Everyone knows NYPD Blue, unless you're a hermit. Same doesn't go for B5.

Also, you'll notice that the only piece of information that doesn't relate to Andrea's new job - the NYPD Blue bit -
is in the lede. It's just there to hook you and make you read the rest of the article.
Economy. Getting the most bang for your word limit. That's what it's all about with these short newsbriefy things. Snappy, interesting prose makes for a happy editor.
