whitestars still troublin me......

Ya i know I should really get off the Whitestar thing but after readin B5 tech and watching "Endgame" today I wonder something.

JMS said there were about 80 Whitestars left over from the Shadow War. We can assume that they were in the Earth Civil War as well.

Well It says that Earth has over 200 GOD defense platforms, and only about 20 earth ships joined up with Sheridan.

So how did about a hundred ships take out 200 defense platforms in a few minutes?

After rewatchin "Endgame" a few more times I see that it takes a lot just for fighters to bring em down, so I doubt they are the answer.

By having each ship knock out two platforms in a few minutes?

Seriously, though, who said Sheridan had only 100 ships? Delenn was standing by in hyperspace with a whole fleet of alien warships - Narn, Vree, Drazi, you name it. They were kept in reserve because Sheridan wanted a Human vs. Human "clean fight" to topple Clarke, not an alien invasion. But when Clarke turned the defense grid on the planet below, Sheridan called for the cavalry and Delenn (once again) rode the the rescue.

We don't know how many defense platforms were orbiting earth.

If there are only 80 whitestars in the fleet, why did we see hundreds of such ships parade over Earthdome in "rising star"?

We didn't as far as I recall. Twenty, maybe forty? Certainly not hundreds. The CGI budget wouldn't have handled it after all the S4 space battles, there was no dramatic reason to show hundreds, and no reason for Delenn to have hundreds do a fly-by within the story, either. This was a demonstration of power, not an invasion.

If more than about twenty appeared on screen (or seemed to) I'd say that they were circling Geneva and making multiple passes over EarthDome.

I also suspected that the amount of Noise the Whitestar fleet made while flying over Earthdome was deliberate, too.

Delenn & Sheridan probably told every ship to make as much Noise as possible.

Playing with the power settings for the gravity drive would give them a nice subsonic rumble.

There is no reason to believe a gravity drive is anything but Silent.
Except when Delenn Wants noise, that is.

Some of that noise would be generated simply by the passage of a large, solid object at high speed through the atmosphere. It is also possible that the White Stars weren't using the gravitic drive (which might not be safe that close to the surface of an inhabited planet

) but some kind of secondary reaction engine or air-breathing system. I assume that they must have a back-up propulsion system in the event the primary drive fails.

Joe, I was referring to the Rattle the Teacups effect when the fleet flew over.
And, since they were going Low & Slow for the flyover, I doubt the speed of their passage generated much noise.

We saw a Minbari shuttle picking up a passenger in the middle of a Minbari city once in perfect silence.
No reason to believe the Shuttles have better propulsion systems than the White Stars.

Plus, considering Minbari cities use so much Chrystal in their cities, I'd bet the Minbari prefer Not to have their Teacups rattled every time a ship flies over.
Which we saw them doing a few times.
