What I *really* liked about Legend of the Rangers(spoilers)

Dude,

KoshN. You are NOTORIOUS for posting 3 and 4 comments in a thread back to back.

I think there was a thread in the B5 forum that you had 5 straight. Perhaps you need to look into some sort of outline/condensing format. Not bitching or anything, exactly the opposite actually. I just get a chuckle whenever I see you ripping off a stream of 2-3 posts back to back like that

Another thing I liked about Legend of the Rangers:

6. The push-pull between duty and sacrifice.

Martell initially is dishonored for refusing to fall on his sword in the initial engagement. He saves himself, his ship, and his crew to fight another day. He performs the larger duty in violation to the Ranger code of sacrifice.

This earns him the active dislike of another Minbari captain, who like the majority of Rangers, believes in duty to the point of sacrifice, no matter the circumstance.

Martel is forgiven (due in part by G'Kar's advocacy) and given a command. He then sets out on a cooperative mission alongside this particular Minbari Captain. During the engagement, the Minbari Captain opts to sacrifice his doomed ship in exchange for the destruction of the enemy ship, and in turn saves Martel and his crew. The Minbari Captain honorably employs the code of sacrifice in performance of the mission.

Another thing about Legend I liked:

7. Ships of the Line need not apply for Ranger front line duty.

IMHO the prevailing concept of TV SciFi space fleets seems to follow the WWII philosophy for roles and deployment strategies for ships.

The Ranger vessel showcased in the telemovie seems to be a Frigate, or Destroyer class. This is perfectly in keeping with the logistical, financial, and coverage constraints imposed by galactic distances. All fleets need destroyer-class vessels that are expendable but able to hold their own as trip-wire vessels, frontier defense, combat support, search and rescue, etc. Ships of the Line are too expensive and non-expendable for such roles.

I believe that this choice of class of ship will enhance a LOTR's series plot choices and enrich the show as a whole. David-vs-Goliath, embarass-the-big-bully-battleship, sneak-and-peak-stealth-missions, etc. Firepower and stand-and-deliver will not solve most problems for these Rangers.

Although I would love to watch a *few* episodes exploring the combat capabilities of a Sharlin class Minbari cruiser, etc:) I do love the big ships and big guns, but can now see the possiblities in forming the series around the picket ships. Ships of the Line need not apply.

I think the potential of this serious is WAY OFF THE SCALE!!!

There is so much talent here:

1.)Way to go people. The special effects team deserves a standing elvation. Amazing sequences.......

2.)I loved the bantering and one liners among the crew.

3.) G'Kar was a treat.

4.)The possibilities for this becoming a massive story arc of epic perportions is staggering. Straczynski has done it again!!!

5.)I loved the directing and I thought Dylan
makes a superb captain.

6.)The acting was way above the standard of your average sci-fi flick and worthy of attention.

7.)Truly one of the finer Pilots I've seen in years, a real tasters choice. I give it two thumbs up!!! Way up...............

Any Navy that starts thinking of ANY class of ship as "Expendable" will Lose it's next battle.
And the war soon after.

An interesting viewpoint Bakana,

Not that I would digress into a war of opinion over fleet doctrine in this post about cool things Legend-wise, but IMHO the hard truth is, there is a need for Ranger assets that don't break the bank to deploy, or worst case, lose.

I try not to let the latter-day USN zeal for zero-defect, zero-tolerance, no losses peactime operations rule the day when thinking about what a future-war navy would really do.

I think the word expendable is the implied meaning behind even thinking of building and deploying ships known to be unable to handle certain enemy ships. The fleet planners are willing to risk losing a smaller ship to perform a mission so that the bonus resources can be saved to use elsewhere. War of attrition, and all that.

Yet I do not wholly champion the idea of sending Ranger crews out in underpowered vessels on their own. But sometimes there isn't a choice in the matter. LOTR began with a single Ranger frigate, on it's own, chasing pirate(?) fighters...obviously not a planned deployment since it could easily be turned against the Frigate. The next mission included a destroyer and a frigate on an escort mission.

Let's say that every Ranger vessel built is the largest, fastest, most capable War Cruiser stocked to the gills with the latest technology. No expenses are spared to ensure that every vessel deployed by the Rangers can best any other known or conceived enemy ship design. This doctrine can be defeated by an enemy with hunter-killer groups, rock-paper-scissors matching (think submarine vs. battleship), etc. Even without direct military victory, an enemy could use misdirection and feinting to lead these cruisers all over the galaxy, draining their resources and sapping the will/energy of the crews.

And what's the refit time of a large ship vs. a small one? The loss of a single Ship of the Line from active duty places a large strain on the deployment until it is replaced.

Finally, larger numbers of trip-wire vessels, frontier patrols, light escorts, etc. act to increase the *density* of fleet coverage. A large cruiser could be, say, 20 minutes away from anywhere in a large volume of space, for example...instead, there are two or more frigates/destroyers available within a few minutes of enemy action.

Thus endeth the sermon:)

Ships are Not designed to be "expendable".

They are designed to best serve the Purpose of their individual missions.

USN Destroyers were originally designed as Submarine Hunter/Killer vessels.
And as Fast, Mobile scout platforms.
They did a pretty good job of this.

Submarines almost alway chose to either Run or Hide, they seldom tried to fight back because they aren't Designed for it.

As scout platforms, they were designed to Find the enemy and report his position.
They were also designed to be Fast enough to outrun anything too big for them to fight on an "Even Up" basis.

Their current replacement, the Frigate, still does Anti Submarine warfare.

It also acts as an Anti Aircraft platform.

The advent of Radar, Sonar and Satellites has mostly eliminated the "scouting" aspect of the job, so you mostly find the smaller vessels playing AA Guard/Screen for larger ships in the fleet or patrolling in Squadrons looking for submarines to kill.

What I really liked about rangers lets see ? Just sbout everything the acting the story line the visual effects left a lot of unanswered questions that can only be answered by a series going into production. Some things I especially liked
the welcoming ceremony
Tannier getting his butt kicked by David

All of Dulann's scenes

Lastly all of Firell's scenes cause she's one of my favorite characters already.

The premiere or pilot to every series always ends up looking wretched in retrospective. The acting, the make-up, the effects, the story, etc. The Gathering to name one example is ludicrously bad in comparison to practically anything you could muster from the third or fourth season. I cringe now whenever I see it.

Other than maybe the power-scream, I didn't cringe at all watching Rangers. The badguys were good. The lead is sharp and the chemistry is almost spot-on between the characters.

Maybe this is because I've been a B5 fan longer than a ST, but the rapport between Martel & Dulann (i.e. Neal & Zahara) seemed less forced than it was between Kirk & Spock. It sounded more genuine.

I always love "brothers in combat" type stories and those two were the epitome of that mixed bravado, friendship, & caring. "You hit your head? How ever did that happen?" "Come up here and I'll show you!" That had to be one of the funniest lines in the movie.

This would definitely be a series I'd watch regularly, if not compulsively.

And Ms. Cantrell is not too bad on the eyes either. (coughs nervously) Not-- that it matters, but-- y'know.
