Walter Koenig has died

Springer

Regular
He passed away Sunday night aged 90. As a lifelong Star Trek fan as well as Babylon 5, this is doubly devastating.

Not really sad because I didn't know him personally, but glad he got the chance to shine in other roles, especially as Bester in B5. RIP.

If anyone hasn't seen it, Walter Koenig starred in this neat science fiction movie from 1988 called Moontrap, with Bruce Campbell. It was pretty cool to see him take on a leading heroic role and he and Campbell look like they're having a blast. Here's the full movie on YouTube, it's worth a watch:

Here's what JMS had to say.

I was talking about him and said "be seeing you" to my aunt and uncle on the phone... I had forgotten it on a conscious level it just came out.

I love MOONTRAP (1988). It isn't the greatest film you will ever see, but I remember I first saw it back in the 90s and my first impression on Walter's character was how much I believed this is what an actual Astronaut is like. He just seemed like he captured what a middle-aged Astronaut would be like.

I grew up on the original Star Trek. I was eight years old when Next-Gen started so Star Trek played a major part of my formative years. Chekov, along with all the others were always there, always on, exploring the galaxy in the Starship Enterprise. Even when they're no longer with us, they're always with us with every episode, every movie, every story that's etched in our minds.

This is doubly so for Walter Koenig, as he became one of our favorite antagonists we loved to hate in Alfred Bester, the PsyCop. You could tell he reveled in playing Bester, because he was so far from our perceptions of him as Chekov.

They say we die twice. We die when we shed our mortal coil, and we die the last time someone says our name. So long as we remember and celebrate the life of Walter Koenig, he remains alive in all our childish hearts.
