The writer's guide was made available to fans back in 1999, so this has been discussed a lot over the years, though obviously you weren't aware of that.
JMS had planned to depict both Lyta and Lennier during the Telepath War, in the flashback from the Crusade episode "The Path of Sorrows". Lyta would have been the rogue held captive in the Psi Corps base on Mars. Lennier would have been seen holding off the guards as she arms the bomb near the end of Matheson's flashback. Even that snippet is ambiguous, since it is possible that one or both of them escaped through an underground tunnel or something before the blast. It would have been a typical JMS tease, but it I can't tell if it would have been a "WWE" G'Kar/Londo tease, or a "Deconstruction of Falling Stars" Garibaldi gets shot tease. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Because they couldn't get Pat Tallman for the episode the teep was changed to another character, and there was no point showing Lennier if Lyta wasn't there. So, assuming this is really how JMS originally intended for them to die, he is now free to change the circumstances of their eventual deaths. There is some indication that he plans to do so.
In the run up to the production of the Rangers pilot, JMS got a lot of questions about who from B5 was going to be in the film. A lot of people hoped/expected to see Lennier, preferably doing something to redeem himself. But JMS indicated that the film took place after the Teep War. When specifically asked if Lyta and Lennier died in the war, JMS gave subtly different answers. To the Lyta question he simply said, "Yes". When asked about Lennier he said, "Right around there, yeah."
Which may mean that they no longer die together, and that he may have a new idea about the nature of Lennier's passing.
