James Doohan

I heard about this a couple days ago and finally found a link about it. Seems that Doohan has been diagnosed as being in the early stages of Alzheimer's.

"Just before they went into warp, I beamed the whole kit and kaboodle into their engine room, where they'll be no tribble at all."

"Aye. And if my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a wagon."

Original Trek was the first series that I remembered seeing, accepting Captian Kangaroo. I had the great honor of meeting Jimmy (which he insisted that I call him) in the 70s at a ST convention. What a nice guy.

My thoughts go out to he and his family.

On the ironic "plus side", his health is so poor that he may not have to worry about Alzheimers. The man is overweight and suffers from high blood pressure, diabetes and Parkinsons, I believe. He recently turned 84, so he just might live long enough to keep his facilities more or less intact.

How sad but true. We've actually almost lost him a couple of times in the past couple of years through Pnuemonia (sp?) and other stuff. I believe his last bout with it, he officially announced his retirement.

Addresing the original point though... of course it's sad he's got Alzheimer's. I think losing one's faculties must be one of the worst things.

But then, I don't feel this major sadness. Sure, it's sad, but he is 86. I mean, it's sort of the end of life for most people. I think it's a case of inevitability but also the good fact that he's got 86 years behind him!

Hope that makes sense. :)

Very true, Antony. But it is sad to think of someone who provided you with so much entertainment is suffering, and whose loved ones are suffering, anyhow.

And for me that he's just old. They remain kind of timeless when in episodes of TV and film. I always think they'll remain that way.
