Great Enterprise news

For a while I've said (not necessarily on here) that Branon and Rick would be pushed aside ("to develop new projects") allowing for Manny Coto to take over, and sure enough it's happening it seems.

This is FANTASTIC news. I am such a fan of Manny, and this is just what is needed to really rock the boat.

CE should be happy. :)

Any relation to Vir?

How are they going to dig themselves out of the hole that the last two minutes of the Season 3 finale put them in? Ack! Ptui! :p :p :p [I'm not saying anything specific, in the interest of avoiding SPOILERS.]

Ok...how much control/input has Manny had up til now? What are is past achievements/shows? And, most importantly, does this mean that B&B are out completely? As in gone, only get screen credit now for show creation (not that they really deserve it)...as in have no more control or power over Trek...period? :D

If so...happy dance is warranted!

Re: Great News?

I thought you were going to say it was cancelled.

I don't know, man. This guy's record is nothing to drop a log about. He wrote 6 eps of Enterprise, was a writer on a cancelled show called "Strange World", is listed as creator and writer for the cancelled "Odyssey 5" (more time-travel crap), listed as a writer on the new "Outer Limits" (most of the stories were pretty bland), wrote an episode of "Tales from the Crypt", and wrote the Joseph Mazzello cyber-robot suit flick "Star Kid", which my kids thought was stupid. Oh and he also wrote "Zenon, the Zequel" for Disney Channel.

Dance if you want. I'll sit this one out. :(

Re: Great News?

Ah...that's why I asked...didn't have time to look him up then. Thanks for the info. Yeah, what I thought, not much to get excited about.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...ST needs someone with passion, imagination, and vision to bring it back to glory. Oh...and talent would be nice, too. :D

This guy sounds like he's of the same ilk as B&B and is simply going to carry on with the same old boring, bland, uninteresting, unimaginative, blah characters, and so on, type of thing.

And again, does this mean that B&B are out...completely...gone?

Re: Great News?

I never saw it, but, it was my understanding that Odyssey 5 was very good. Wouldn't be the first time a good series was cancelled in it's infancy.

Re: Great News?

I started watching it when it premiered, but quickly lost interest. It started with a great idea, but then turned into a really bad X-Files-like, soap opera-like, ....thing. It also got very boring. Hm....just like ST.

Could we get a link???
I may start watching Enterprise again, the first non B+B Trek since DSN9!!
I don't think Braga was a part of DS9. Berman was, but Braga didn't come on until Voyager as I understand it. Wasnt DS9 a Michael Piller thing?

Berman and Piller are listed as show creators for DS9, but Braga was still involved with it at the time. He wasn't listed as a show creator until Enterprise, since Jeri Ryan was listed as co-creator of Voyager. Braga was EP for Voyager and I think was listed as an EP for DS9 as well. Needless to say, he was there and his influence was, unfortunately, felt.

Keating: Coto Will Become 'Enterprise' Showrunner

and it was Jeri Taylor who was a co-creator of Voyager.

Berman wasn't involved with DS9 in the later seasons that much, but he and Pillar were the creators.

Doh! Taylor...what WAS I thinking! Sorry, you are correct. Jeri..Jeri...same first name. :D

Thanks for the link. It looks like they're not really gone. They're both still in control and have say over story and the feel and spirit. Too bad. Well, we'll see. But I think ST needs to just die for a while.

No no no. :p Braga never touched DS9 thankfully. So no, he was not there.

Jeri Taylor, not Jeri Ryan, was a co-creator of Voyager.

As to Manny, well, some people could see this as a good thing, some as a bad thing. All depends on your angle, what you think of his work.

I loved the Outer Limits which he worked on. I adored Odyssey 5, which he ran. And I think Enterprise has got better and he's been a force behind that. "The Council" was one of the best episodes yet, yet the season finale (written by Berman and Braga) just wasn't as good.

In terms of influence over the show... well, it all depends. Berman will still probably be around, but he's never been a major exerting force. He's more like a CEO. Braga will be the difference more than anything, it's always the name alongside Berman that guides the ship. I think Braga is, by all accounts, stepping aside. So he'll be a consulting producer probably, which means he'll look over scripts, but Manny will be left to guide the show. For better or for worse, we'll have someone new to give it a go.

Voyager is a classic example of the different executive producers pulling the show. Seasons 1 & 2, Piller. He went more on the danger, the isolation, the tension (the best years, IMHO). Season 3 (and a little bit of 4) was Jeri Taylor. She went the Janeway woman of power, more sensitive episodes. 4ish - 6 was when Braga took over (some of the worst years) which was largely about titty and explosions. Season seven was Ken Biller who did try to clear it up a bit, and season seven while not stellar did at least try to improve and tie up some loose ends.

I would agree with you Antony on your Voyager breakdown...and overall your post. I will play the wait and see with Enterprise...hopefully he can get Trek back on track, feeling like a part of Trek, staying truer to continuity, give us better and more interesting and growing characters, and oh, get the hell away from time travel!

I would prefer to hear that BB was out completely, but it would seem his control will at least be less. The question now is whether Cotto will cease the moment to shine and breath heart and passion back into a dead universe, and will B&B shut up and stay out of the way and let him?

I, once again, will give it a chance and see. But I'm not expecting much. Trek really needs a complete shake up and house cleaning IMHO.

May I ask what is this all about? Frankly, I don't understand anything you've said here. Can you lighten the way for the one who was in the cave for... quite some time concerning Star Trek?

Not that there's anything wrong with either. :) But they should be accompanied by coherent story telling and characters I can be induced to care about on some level. Voyager mostly failed on both scores. (As I've noted before the only 3 dimensional people on the show - in more senses than one - were a hologram and a cyborg. The latter gave new meaning to the phrase "well-rounded character", but she actually was an interesting being with problems that she struggled with, unlike the hundreds of cyphers wandering around the sterile hallways of the ship.)

Regards,

Joe

From scifi.com:

Star Trek: The Next Generation star Brent Spiner (Data) will guest star in UPN's upcoming fourth season of Star Trek: Enterprise, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Spiner has been tapped to do three episodes of the Trek prequel series, playing the great-great-grandfather of Dr. Noonien Soong, the creator of Data. Spiner previously played Dr. Soong in an episode of TNG.

Rumors also suggest that original Star Trek star William Shatner may also pay a visit to Enterprise, but sources told the trade paper that there are no immediate plans for a guest appearance. Enterprise, originally scheduled for 9 p.m. ET/PT Fridays in the fall, will now air at 8 p.m., the trade paper reported.

Can we say acts of despiration? Still...it might be interesting to see what Brent does. Now bringing Shatner on board would be most intriguing.

And it hasn't even hit the air again yet and already they're mucking around with the timeslot. That is not a good sign...not a good sign at all. My guess is that by moving it down to the 8pm EST/7pm CST slot they're trying to avoid going against Stargate directly...though I'm not 100% sure SG-1 will run 9EST/8CST with Atlantis following or if SG-1 will be starting at 8EST/7CST, which would put ST and SG directly against each other. I know that both of the two hour premiers for SG-1 and SGA started at 9EST/8CST...so I think they will run starting in that timeslot.

If they're not head-to-head then Paramount is probably hoping to gain viewers by tieing into the SG phenomon on Fridays...however, if Paramount tried to go head-to-head with SG...I fear those who watch both shows will record ST and watch SG or skip Trek altogether.

This spells doom for Trek. I have to admit I will try to watch Enterprise again this next season to see how Cotto does with the show. But my expectations for Trek are exhausted...so now it's just to see if things are status-quo...in which case...I'll stick with SG.

Manny Cotto...the man picked by B&B to run the show while they work on their other SF show. Some have said that Cotto's eps this last season were good...though the ones I saw were ok at best. His past job record is much less than stellar, IMO...so I'm not expecting much.

Check back a few posts and there's link there about it.
