i was wondering?

has there ever been a show cancelled after 13 eps? then be brought back more than one year later???

I can't think of an example off the top of my head, although there have been a number of shows that were cancelled by one network and picked up by another later.

But the question you ask in the body of your post really has nothing to do with the question you asked in the thread title. Whether or not it has been done before is irrelevant. The mere fact that something hasn't been done necessarily mean that it can't be. It may be that no one has ever had a reason to do the thing concerned or found a means to do it.

Crusade is an atypical case to begin with. Most shows "cancelled after 13 episodes" are cancelled after they are on the air because of poor ratings. So it isn't surprising that they aren't picked up by other networks. Most shows that are cancelled before they air never make it to 13 episodes - if they are terrible the problems often show up long before that and they are killed at the pilot stage or after one or two shows are in the can.

So it isn't like there is this huge pool of "Crusade-like shows" that we can compare or examine for clues.

There can be a first time for anything. Prior to the original Star Trek no network had ever commissioned a second pilot after rejecting the first. This has happened several times since. (The Love Boat went through three pilots before it became a series - I couldn't begin to tell you why.

) I'm sure any number of people told Gene R., "Well, you gave it your best shot, but give up on this science fiction thing, Star Trek is dead." They would have had history on their side, but they would have been wrong.

To paraphrase CBS (I think) at the time,

"Why would we want Star Trek when we already have Lost In Space?

Very little in life is ever 100% certain.

I believe it was NBC that aired Trek originally. I'm getting this from a SNL sketch, so it's not very reliable.

what i meant by it was if this sort of thing hasn't been done before, then how do we know it could be done...

if this makes no sense dont worry... it does in my mind...

i also believe that a network would only bring back a show if it had a big enough following, and certainly B5 has such a following, but crusade only had 13 eps to work with... this is why they're doin Rangers... to prove the current fan following...

whoa... i think i almost made sense of what sci fi is doing...

now in order to redeem myself for really killing this thread... a little plug for comedy central...

"Office Space" will be on this upcoming Sunday on Comedy Central"

Well, like I said, similar things have been done. It all depends on how exact you want to make the match, and there aren't very many shows that match Crusade's history closely.

We know that this sort of thing could be done, regardless of whether or not it has been done before, because all that is necessary to do it is for Sci-Fi to decide they want to. JMS has said he wants to do it, most of the cast has said they would like to return and Warner Bros. will be happy to produce the show as long as their expenses are covered. It all comes down to whether or not Sci-Fi thinks it fits their plans and their budget, and fundamentally whether or not they have the will to do it. As the Jim Lovell character is made to say in Apollo 13 about the first moon landing, "It wasn't a miracle. We just decided to do it."

We do know that Sci-Fi wanted Crusade at the time the production was finally shut down, but that TNT asked an outrageous amount of money for it (precisely in order to prevent Sci-Fi from taking it.) So there has always been a degree of interest there, and Bonnie Hammer has said that they love the production team of Netter and Straczynski and want to do projects with them.

Rangers is a non-issue in this case, because Sci-Fi really didn't choose it instead of Crusade. Crusade wasn't really on the table until after the Rangers deal was made.

As noted in numerous threads, JMS took pains to establish Crusade as its own show. When Sci-Fi started negotiating with JMS and Warner Bros. for a new B5 project back in December, B5 was just finishing its first run and Sci-Fi hadn't even acquired the rights to Crusade yet. It wasn't really on their radar, and wouldn't be until they saw what kind of ratings it got on "their air."

As it happens, Sci-Fi wouldn't pick up the rerun rights to Crusade until after the Rangers movie was a done deal. Based on the B5 ratings Sci-Fi wanted something that would be more of a continuation of B5 than Crusade was, so they probably didn't even consider the older sequel at that point. (Although I suspect that JMS probably suggested it.) Their position was that they would consider any possible Crusade projects based on its own ratings when and if they saw them.

Rangers was a B5 project based on the B5 ratings. It was the "something new" that Sci-Fi wanted at that point. They'll deal with Crusade when the time comes, when JMS's schedule is a little clearer, and after they've seen how the possible* Rangers series does.

So Joe, I guess you're saying that the reason we got Rangers instead of Crusade is because of timing.

It's funny that TNT demanded a series that was far removed from Babylon 5, where Sci0fi channel wanted the opposite. Them crazy TV folk.

Office Space on Comedy Central? Hmm, they're probably gonna edit out half the movie. I would suggest renting it to anyone who wants to see it.
