Battlestar Galactica The Greatest Scif show? or Babylon 5 [Spoilers for BSG S4]

Oh, a lot of good has come from this thread. I've had a lot of fun :D

I hope you won't get a wrong picture of this place from this thread (welcome, btw!) - it's quite rare for us to have such wankers here. And I will go Samuel L. Jackson on him if he doesn't lay off it.

Not too late to change it. :)

The ignore feature is great, used either from the site itself or by just skipping posts.

Now, when I caught the pilot to BSG I just found it didn't suit my tastes or possibly mood at the time. But when I run out of some things I have wanted to rent on Netflix, I'll need another sci-fi series to check out, and BSG will likely be it.

So start anew, for the newbi here who doesn't want to backread through the trash talk. Sell me on BSG.

Uh, but no spoilers, if that's possible. If not, just tell me this is a spoiler-filled subject, and I'll slouch away quietly. I tend to go for interesting characters over all else in a series. I get dragged down with a series that is ALL heavy (that might be why I stopped with BSG after first view, for personal reasons I'm not really into depressing material right now).

Should I wait awhile before trying the show out? Does it have lighter moments/subplots or is it really an all-out serious, "mankind is always on the brink of total devastation" kind of series?

I suppose a little gunfight at the O K Coral is good once in a while. In number ways Im not that different from thinker im opinionated. I am also a bit of a know it all, who really doesn't know it all. Unlike him i do tend to admit when I am wrong or might be wrong about something. I do know a pretty fair amount about science fiction and fantasy, Ive been reading and watching for decades and its a subject that i like to talk about.

It's a nearly all apocalypse all the time sort of show; light moments are few and far between.

Im not at all sure I would ever want to see Galatica lighten up,To me it just would not be the same show, it would loose it dramatic edge.

If you want a serious discussion about the show in another thread, then I'm game. As to being wrong about the case I've built. Its the only CASE here. no negation is no negation.

I don't quite grasp how one establishes "facts in evidence" regarding your extreme disgust with BSG? I do not see how facts have anything to do with an individual's opinion of what makes a show great. Sure, argue why you like a show or not. You have been vehement in your examples of what you see is wrong with the show. I will certainly not disagree with your assessment. On the other hand, why does your opinion carry greater weight than someone like me saying "I really enjoy the general direction of the story, and I love actors X, Y and Z in their roles"? Long-winded analysis, while insightful, doesn't mean "rightness".

Because I've done the work of research to prepare fifty+ reviews over three and a half years and I probably know this show better than most of you?

Because I've sat through hours of this garbage with a close attention to detail because I wanted to make sure I was fair before I wrote a critique?

Because I approach critiques as a process of trying to find something good to say, even in a pile of brown steaming goo?

Because while you may not like it, I'm something of a subject expert on this series, and thus my opinion backed by presented facts [examples] i give carries more rational "weight" than mere feelings.

No brag. Just fact.

Second insult. Looks to me that good manners are not present among some here. There is a difference between expressing a solid vigorous opinion and trying to insult your way to a conclusion between or among debaters.

Too bad. I had hoped for; but not expected, better.

(Note: bold emphasis is in the original.) How many times are you going to threaten to unleash such a spewage?

This is your feeble attempt to bring me down into the gutter with you so you can reach up and try to address me as my equal or peer? Sorry about that. You just aren't important enough for me to stoop that far down into your sewage.

Have a NICE day, Vacant.

T.

Thinker at this point I really don't care what you think about anything, and I suspect the vast majority of the people you have argued with feel the same way I do . In your eyes no one else is entitled to an opinion that disagrees with yours or fails to meets your overly rigorous criterion.

... and a wanker that is starting to test my patience.

B5TV isn't generally a strict place with rules. However .. since registering here, you have done nothing but antagonise posters, putting them down, and proclaiming how your opinion is the only one that is valid. Learn to play nice, or I WILL end you.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I'll likely get around to it some day, but with my own and my family's personal problems right now, it'd probably be best if I didn't try to immerse myself in BSG at the moment.

I'm sure it'll be on DVD (or it's equivalent, what BlueRay is now the wave of the future?) for a long time. :)

I have heard many good things about it, and it is good to hear there is a sci-fi show out there that is a cut above a lot of what has been offered in years past.

I hope the show ends well (as in well-done), as I understand the series is wrapping up soon (this season or next, maybe?) I've heard all sorts of predictions, despite the fact that I don't follow the show myself (yet).

Thinker look no one is asking you to be a saint. As I have said before your level of knowledge is impressive as hell. If you would just not be so damned belligerent and condescending you could do a lot of good on this site, I am not trying to patronize you here. You do bring a different perspective to the whole debate on this issue BSG on science fiction no one denies that, but we don't agree with you on things. You need learn to be patient with people that you don't agree with and who don't agree with you, in others words you have to lighten up a little. You want us to respect you, fine , give us respect in turn. It does work both way you know. I think we would all prefer friendly debate with you to acrimony that we have experienced .What good is having all that wonderful knowledge that you do, if you cause people to shut you out? It all goes to waist if you can't share it. Please don't ruin it for yourself.

Blah, blah, blah...Unless you're willing to actually discuss the topic of the thread rather than what you've decided it should be your opinion is off topic and carries no weight at all.

Do please go and start your own thread in a non-B5 forum and let those of who are interested in the actual thread continue the discussion. It'll be interesting to see if anybody finds you worth talking to.

Quite frankly, it isn't worth my time trying to back-read and figure out if you, Thinker, mean B5 or BSG.

If you do mean B5 then... all I can say is that it's funnier than hell seeing Jan reply to you.

I'd not tout the expert label you give yourself (if indeed it is for B5) around her. Unless you like the experience of being hit by an experiential-semitruck. :D

And while Jan is here, and if she returns, thanks for all of the JMS updates you come over here to post for us. I lost track of how to get to/read the moderated JMS newsgroup, and your updates are very interesting and helpful. Especially when keeping up with the goings-on of a guy who apparantly never eats or sleeps. ;)

Thinker believes he has given objective, logical, factual evidence that BSG is a heap-o-crap. Most of us would disagree. Having not seen the new BSG myself, I can only say that I find most of his alleged objective criteria for declaring it so, to be a heap-o-crap on their own. I base this on my 19 years' experience on the screening committee for the oldest festival of experimental and independent film in the US.

Thinker was describing himself as a BSG expert.

Now, Hypatia...do you really think I'd do that?

You're quite welcome. Here's the easiest way to read the newsgroup. Dunno if JMS ever eats or sleeps but he doesn't do much posting lately. Here's his latest. While I'm being off-topic, though, I'll be at the Seattle Comic Con he's appearing at this weekend so if there's any news I'll 'link in'.

I'm not important enough? I must be since you keep replying to my posts. I don't have to bring you down; at this point you couldn't be any lower if you tried. Your threats to unleash various types of language onto other posters is not welcome; cut it out.

Thanks! I'll have to remember to save all the addresses to my websites for when I have (hope to have) a rather lengthy stay out of town. That is easy to read and get to, nothing special required. And I also saved the site that has just JMS news.

Have a great time at the convention. You don't miss many of them, do you? :)

I've done the same for Babylon-5 my friend.
Bring on your so called truck. I'm sure you actually have some experienced Fiver backgrounders like Brandon Bray and Chris Sapiano or others. I've been a FIVER a very LONG time. Argued story, plot character, and fictional tech longer than some of you have even known the show existed-since 1996 has it been?

Longer than some of you have been functioning adults in fact.

The title of this thread is "Battlestar Galactica the greatest Show Ever; or Babylon 5?"

Some here tried to defend the premise that GINO was even in the same league when its patently not. If all I had to say was that single sentence, then I would say it and be done. But someone posted one of my critiques without clearing it with me first, and then told me. I followed the track here to see what I would find. I found some who challenged my opinion and credentials to discuss that show and attacked me PERSONALLY in absentia,

The mark of intellectual cowards.

I came aboard, defended my viewpoint, expecting peer debate instead of this nonsense.

If you bothered to read instead of emotionally attack me, my position was quite clear and on point. GINO is not a good series and it will be forgotten, much like the majority of the Berman Drek product.

I just am astonished that a community of Fivers are so close minded, bigoted and unwilling to discuss when challenged.

As for you Vacant, I've yet to read one coherent thought from you. Do you actually have anything to say, beside "neaner neaner?" That is the behavior of a child.

As I said to Gavo- if you want to discuss Rob Moore's show in another thread, I'm game but this thread is where the discussion started.

For those of you who can't tell what I discuss here, either you don't want to wade through the posts or you didn't show the interest, this one post should make QUITE clear that I discuss Ron Moore's show specifically as being an inferior product of no merit, and that it will never threaten B-5's position as a premier science fiction show.

1993 for "The Gathering." 1994 for the series proper thanks to PTEN making B5 wait around for Time Trax or some other show to get its production abilities ready to produce a show.

It's funny that you're on here complaining about people attacking you instead of discussing the topic, and yet you're going around telling people that you're smarter than they are and that they're children.
