Agreed. In fact, my impression of JMS's remarks was that the "hook" referred to was "showing the viewers" what was happening on Earth (and hence the whole "War Zone" episode) instead of "telling the viewers." YMMV, of course.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I just preferred Tolkien's vision of TLotR to Jackson's. Jackson got the movies to sell, for sure, but for Tolkien fans there were laugh-out-loud bad scenes in them. Jackson does not understand subtle and TMoS needs subtlety, not sledgehammers...

Jackson would be a terrible choice, as he has already deomnstrated that he considers himself a better storyteller than Tolkien, which disasterous results (all the laugh-out-loud bad moments of TLotR were when Jackson decided he had the "better storytelling vision"). How could he not consider...

Agreed, and this is surely one of the most serious temptations to authors writing novels after the fact. They get wrapped up in their charactors and their egos become the charactor's egos, so whenever their charactors encounter the canon they just HAVE to influence it. On the other hand...

Just to pick a nit, the name is Weta (techically, Wetadigital LTD), not WETA (a mistake I make all the time myself as I am a member of WETA, a DC public radio station). The FX house is named after an insect common in New Zealand. It isn't an abbreviation like ILM.
