Train Job isn't a bad epsiode, it just makes a bad first episode, as it assumes a certain amount of knowledge about the characters and situation.

I believe that's Jayne and NEVER tell him it's a girl's name or he's likely to push his favourite gun somewhere you'd find a little uncomfortable :D

From your description it sounds like the first episode you've watched is Train Job? This wasn't supposed to be the first episode and isn't a good introduction. Watch 'Serenity', which is the REAL first episode, and see what you think.
