And what, exactly would lead you to believe that? The fact that your own preconceptions have no apparent connection to reality? Or do you have sources of information you're not telling us about, other than inventing things out your imagination? They do research. Lots of it. They spend lots of...

Not the only one, no. But you certainly seem to be in the minority among the general population if you're interested in watching intelligent SF shows. Maybe. But I believe it was also the channel's most expensive original show. So it had to be the highest rated by a significant margin, and...

Quite honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about here, so it's difficult to fashion a response. But I'll try. The US TV industry, even before the advent of cable, was never as simple as you suggest. There have always been local stations in addition to the networks. Even the...

So? What's your point? The ultimate purpose of ratings is not to determine how many people are watching a TV program. The ultimate purpose of ratings is to provide a method of determining where and how advertising money is spent. The spenders of that advertising money want the ratings in the...

   If the "categories" you describe are the ones we've been discussing, they would appear to have been invented by Bonnie Hammer, the most important "Sci-Fi suit" in this discussion. They're certainly not terms that are common in the industry.

Huh? "Cooking the books"? What are you talking about? In the US, the primary TV Ratings have been based on Household numbers since time immemorial. That's what the advertisers seem to want, for a variety of reasons. (Whether or not those reasons make sense doesn't matter.) It's also easier to...

Well, no. First, the basic ratings numbers are percentages of households, not numbers of people. So all your math above is irrelevant. Second, the 300 stations includes many regional and specialty stations that simply aren't a factor in national ratings because they're not available to enough...

[sigh] Then you weren't reading carefully enough. Here it is: Huh? I haven't the slightest idea what you're trying to say here, unless you're trying to make the case that what the "audience" wants is simply what you want. The problem is that the "core" SF audience -- what Hammer calls the...

I don't know if I'd quite go that far -- the Minbari were (and still are, at the time of B5) quite a long way away from First One status. But if the Shadows' goal is to strengthen the best of the lesser races through conflict, wiping them out would seem to be a bit counterproductive.
