That's gonna depend on who advertizes.

If it's IBM's ad for an OS/390 server, it could be a little expensive for most of us.

Those things go for around a $Million all tricked out...

To encourage advertising by IBM you probably do not have to actually have to buy one of its machines. Simply get your computer manager's secretary to write and ask for details. Include in the letter a sentence saying that the companie’s/universitie’s technical staff saw the advert on Sci-Fi during Rangers.

With machines that expensive IBM only has to sell 2 or 3 more a year to cover the cost of the advert. Its head office will probably be happy if IBM sells a few more desktop pcs.

Andrew, sales of the IBM OS/390 are Booming!

One OS/390 server can replace as many as 500 Sun Sparc workstations. That's the whole point of that commercial, even though they didn't mention the brand name of the servers that got replaced. Going from one flavor of Unix to another alos usually means they can just recompile and reinstall 90% of the software, so it's also a relatively cheap migration.

In addition to the floor Space you get back, the Electric Bill alone is over $100,000 a year less. When you add in the price differential of the 500 Sun Workstations, there's a significant piece of change going back into the budget.

Glad to hear the IBM's UNIX mainframe is selling well. Big blue used to prefer to sell its own software.
