A thought about the Valen and the WhiteStar

At 1300 meters, the Valen would be over one mile long, and I don't buy that. It's also hard to believe that a 'small' patrol ship like the Liandra could be almost two football fields long. I haven't visited B5 Tech, but they don't sound too reliable.

160 meters sounds right on.... the white star is 475 meters lol and thats *OFFICAL* size the valen however sounds way to big id doubt it would be 800 let alone 1300

1300 meters is approximately 4280 feet, a 1000 feet short of a mile. In other words, the Valen is/was a little over 4/5ths of mile long.

But this brings up something that has been bothering me: "Why was the Valen so big?" We didn't see any fighters launched, or escorting like Earth ships while in hyperspace, just the liandra. And it didn't look like it was configured to carry fighters but could have been since they would have had the launch bays closed if they weren't launching. Any ideas?

they were only limited to one escort ship, having fighters out might have made it look suspicious, plus, it was just finished, and if it indeed have fighter bays, they might not have had the chance to get the fighters yet.

If the Liandra had a Whitestar's jump engines, they wouldn't have had to battle the ship at the jumpgate. Simply, they needed that jumpgate.

yes, but Na'Feel said: "Jump Engines are down, we can navigate in normal space, but only about 80%"

There was a thread talking about the name Na"feel and it being a narn name, but no one could remember where they heard it from, then everybody remembered Dureena Na'feel, but the female narn on the Liandra was named Na'Feel, or am i losing my mind, or both at the same time?

Yeah, GShans that was my point. I would never have thought the Liandra had jump engines but they did mention they had jump engines in the movie - that they were off-line and couldn't be repaired easily. I remember a thread here discussing this because Delenn told Sheriden the White Stars were the smallest ships that had their own jump engines (not counting First Ones, of course) though the Liandra was much older than even the first White Star. Unless it was a script snafo or they more recently added a compact jump engine to the Liandra, Delenn was "not telling the whole truth". /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

And yes, we did briefly get into the discussion about the name Na'feel and Dureena Nafeel - probably lost int he Great Backup Loss of 2002 - though it's probably just a coincidence of names - I doubt JMS was planning any connection. It's a big universe; names probably overlap alot. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Three possibilities:

1. Was it not Sheridan who expressed surprise that something that small could have jump engines? I fail to recall who exactly said what.

2. Perhaps the Liandra was modified or upgraded after the Shadow War. Lots of new technology surfaced in that war, and surely the Minbari too discovered new tricks.

3. If that was Delenn commenting the White Stars' jump capability, perhaps she was referring to widespread ships. Perhaps the Liandra was something experimental. I could tell you that airplanes don't generally reach Mach 5, well aware that rare experimental models fly faster.

Since the Liandra had a jump engine, and it would have to be small to fit, this brings me back to my original question as to why massive ships like Valen? I can see the massive size of the Explorer Class since they have to carry massive supplies and spares because of their mission but from a tactical standpoint, it makes more sense to make a ship just large enough to do whatever job it supposed to do and have a crew just large enough to man that ship efficiently. And since small jump engines existed, it seems to me that compact design could be expanded to cover larger ships.

one thing, we're still not sure how long the Liandra has had jump engines, could only be after the Shadow War, and with a WS generator, in which, they would still need bigger ships with bigger powerplants to do the normal things since they can't all have such small things.

Another thing, considering the size of the Liandra, i'm not in the least surprised it can jump, i mean, it barely has to create a jump point, so if it actually uses a WS generator, then it is keeping a lot of power after jumps because of the size of the jump-point.

Sounds reasonale, Channe. You would need a large ship to carry the diplomat's big egos. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

That I did. And I wonder what closets Tafeek was referring to? Water closets, perhaps? /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Does the Liandra have bathrooms - and did they have to renovate facilities for the humans?

Think about it.

Just because Minbari *look* human doesn't mean that they go to the bathroom like them.

Their bathrooms could have been totally incompatible.

Man. Those poor Anla'shok plumbers.

I've gotta get myself a new hobby...

My thoughts exactly. If they didn't have compatable restrooms, the crew must have spent a lot of time cleaning the corridors. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
