Timothy Zahn's Star Wars as Movies?

Timothy Zahn\'s Star Wars as Movies?

For anyone here who has read the EU Star Wars books by Timothy Zahn I've got a question(s) for ya'll.

Do you think an animated(A WELL DRAWN ONE) or computer animated set of Star Wars Movies based on Timothy Zahn's writings sent stright to DVD would be a good idea? (Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher are WAY to old to play those rolls in person seeing how Star Wars: Heir to the Empire takes place 5 years after SW:RotJ)

Would you buy them? Do you think his writings work only in the world of books and wouldn't translate into movie form? Is there even a sownballs chance in Hell Lucas would even do this?

Re: Timothy Zahn\'s Star Wars as Movies?

I haven't read any EU stuff (I just won't read anything that isn't cannon, to me it's just fan fiction) but:

No. Lucas is sick of Star Wars and wants to move on. Someone else might, as an animated series ala Clone Wars, for the money.

Re: Timothy Zahn\'s Star Wars as Movies?

Lucas? No way in hell. But I'd *love* to see it done. IMVHO, they would've made three movies far far better than what Episode I and II have proven to be (and what I'm expecting Ep III to be like).

As far as the original actors being too old: So fudge a bit and move the timeline. I'd still love to see the actors reprise their roles, and I don't think they'd be *too* old for it. After all, I always got the distinct impression in Zahn's books that these were characters who have been through the ringer more than once and have matured considerably since then (i.e. grown old, but with experience and not necessarily age).

*shrugs* Oh well. One can dream... :)

Fair enough, but if Carrie Fisher dons her metal bikini from RotJ I, WILL, BE, SICK...

Re: Timothy Zahn\'s Star Wars as Movies?

Well, to me, the biggest problem would be the age-old issue of translating beloved books to the screen. Maybe an animated series, like the Clone Wars only much better, for the sake of space.

My next problem is who could do Thrawn adequately. I once contemplated Leonard Nimoy, playing it with a bit more warmth and humor than he did Spock -- but there might be others.

LOL! I've thought the same thing! I think it might have something to do with the cover art on the books, there's something about Thrawn's picture that reminds me of Leonard Nimoy...

Re: Timothy Zahn\'s Star Wars as Movies?

If any of the EU stuff were to jump to film or TV (and i'm with Fas here, depsite having consumed a lot of it most is just glorified FF) then it would have to be Zahn's stuff. One of the only EU writers to actually 'write', imho. With some adaption, they could be good on TV or film. David Warner as Thrawn, prehaps??

Good plots and characters, and it had the benefit of being fresh. SW books have been done to the death.

Re: Timothy Zahn\'s Star Wars as Movies?

Zahn is clear and away the best, but Stackpole and Allston have come up with some entertaining reads.

Matthew Stover's "Shatterpoint" is probably the best SW novel I've ever read, though, because it's the most mature SW book ever. The main plot is loosely adapted from Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now, for crying out loud -- of course it's going to be dark and moody.
