The Incredibles

I don't watch cartoon movies, anymore. Well, I didn't. The trailors and buzz for this one peaked my curiosity, so I dragged my girlfriend and tolerated the friendly jabs of "hah-hah, you're taking me to a cartoon."

Well, hell, it was worth it. I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed this stupid cartoon! The last Pixar film I saw was Toy Story and was impressed by how it looked, and this film updates those visual accomplishments. Fortunately, the technical know-how is applied to inventive sets (the villain's island stronghold was quite the eye candy) and aesthetically striking characters.

The dialogue is snappy enough and the sentimentality is mixed in well with the action, so the pacing is perfect.

I also love the little flourishes that spice up the movie, like how they borrow superhero, comic, and pulp fiction design elements from different time periods.

That was probably my favorite part of the whole flick. Other animated flicks have had clever writing and great CGI (Shrek 1 & 2, Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo), but none combined so many elements into the actual setting itself.

I laughed my ass off at little Edna or whatever her name was (it's been 3-4 weeks since I saw it). She absolutely owned me.

The voice acting in The Incredibles was also among the best I've heard. Holly Hunter was probably my favorite, as her character ElastiGirl was hit with a wide range of situations.

Trust me, you don't want a cape. ;)

I stuck around for some of the credits and blurted out, "Oh cool, Coach was Mr Incredible!" My girl looked at like I was retarded.

Also, the voice of Mr Incredible's boss at the insurance company was the highly distinctive character actor who portrayed the brainy villain in Princess Bride and the Grand Nagis on DS9. "Incontheivable!"

Wallace Shawn's voice is certainly distinctive. You don't need to see him at all. I was surprised that it was Craig T. Nelson as Mr. Incredible. The voice was not all that similar to his own.

I loved the Edna Mode clothing desingner character. When I was looking at the credits I couldn't believe what I saw so I looked it up on IMDB. The voice was done by Brad Bird, the director of the movie. :D

Don't feel bad dude -- I told my friends through the entire movie that it was Harrison Ford...

Edna Mode was so utterly fabulous. The cape montage? Hilarious.

Pixar, despite some ... not very strong premises ... has yet to do a bad movie. All the Pixar studio releases have been quite good, and I've enjoyed them all.

Disney just lost Pixar but kept the right to make sequels to those flicks already released jointly. I don't remember who kept the rights to the name. Either way expect crappy sequels if not new crappy Pixar branded movies to come.

By the by I haven't seen Incredibles yet.

My mom as Finding Nemo on DVD and I've avoide watching it so far because I'm afraid it would be all cute and annoying and I don't dig talking animals. But I guess I'll get around to watching it.

Finding Nemo has a particularly moving scene towards the end of the film -- surprisingly it's performed by Ellen DeGeneres, whom I normally can't stand, but she does some fine voicework for the scene.

Finding Nemo is pretty clever in its imagination of undersea "life" and how it could parallel our own. I think my favorite clever adaptation were the seagulls... you'll see if you watch it. They still make me laugh...

Dude, I highly recommend checking out some of Ellen's stand-up. Very funny, original comic (especially the old stuff, before she had sitcoms).
