Trek XI Set for Xmas 2008 release

Maybe I'm being intolerant .. but ..

The latest feature, which has yet to be named, will tell of Kirk and Spock's first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first outer space mission.

I'm still utterly disgusted by the thought of people that are not WIlliam Shatner and Leonard Nimoy playing Kirk and Spock in canon Trek.

They will be in it, by all accounts, playing older versions of themsleves. Check some Trek boards for such rumors.

If they cast them right, I'm happy. The New Voyages actors, for all their am-dram attempts have proven for me that the characters are larger than any single actor, as James Bond is.

That said, I'd still rather have no Trek right now, and leave it five or so years before doing something wild set 100+ years after TNG....

So far, the Kirk and Spock in Starfleet Academy is only a rumor, no details have been released yet, aside from the fact that Producer JJ Abrams will indeed be directing it, and that it is aiming for a December 2008 release (That's not to say the rumors aren't true, but, they have not yet been confirmed)

The thing is, I'm not sure they are. Both characters, basically, had quite simplistic concepts. It's Shatner's and Nimoy's input that made them something bigger-than-life. Yeah, I'm sure it's possible to make it passable with good actors .. I just don't know why, really. New Voyages is great for showing what a bunch of dedicated fans can manage to do with technology nowadays, and it's generally quite good .. but it has the bonus thingy that I don't have to take it seriously. If I seriously had to compare either the NV Kirk or Spock to the originals, it wouldn't end too well.

Star Trek TV has re-hashed and re-hashed the rehashes of Spock so many times under various names. Some quite successful - Data, Odo, the Doctor - and some just utterly boring - Tuvok, Seven and T'Pol. I just don't see why it must be continued to be done when it was already old a decade ago - especially not under the name of "Spock". Yeah, it might not be bad, but it just seems like an even sorrier attempt at milking the cash cow than Trek has yet to do.

That being said though, if either Shatner or Nimoy have a single second of screen time in the movie, I'll probably be a good sheep, once again, and go nevertheless  .. possibly even without I guess. Pah, I'm so Paramount's bitch :p

I watched a special on the History channel the other night that chronicled an auction of Star Trek props from Paramount at Christi's in New York. Even though that was filmed a few months ago I believe (if Im wrong I apologize) but one of the actors from TNG said they thought it was good that Trek was taking a break. Anyway, the model of the Enterprise D went for $250,000 and also the flute Picard plays (cant remember the name of the episode it was in, Im such a terrible Trek fan) went for $40,000.

I guess I will have to wait and reserve judgement on the new Trek movie. So far Im not that impressed with JJ's ability for movies. When I watched MI3 it was like watching an extended Alias episode. But if the story is good I might watch it. Oh who am I kidding, I'll probably pay the full price admission and watch it anyway.

There is a great Trek novel called Enterprise which chronicles the crew's first voyage together and it is by far my favorite Trek novel.

Chilli speask to truth, people. Shatner/Nimoy = Kirk/Spock, end of story.

The only way I'll go watch Paramount's ATM card of a flick is if a bunch of friends just happen to be going, and I happen to have nothing else to do.

Of course it did. It touched Patrick Stewarts lips. :D

;)

the flute Picard plays (cant remember the name of the episode it was in, Im such a terrible Trek fan)

I, however, am a big loser dork, therfore the episode was called "The Inner Light."

I'm an even bigger loser dork in knowing that Picard played it in more than one episode. The flute made a prominant appearance in an episode in which Picard had a one-episode romantic encounter with some fruit roll-up piano-playing scientist whom he sends on some away mission where she almost gets killed. I can't remember for certain, but I think the flute makes appearances in a couple more episodes, but as quick shots of him being recreational and not as an important connector to the episode's plot.

That sounds right to me. BUt I'm not sure. I'm a bad fan, too.

Does anyone remember the episode "Family" (I think it was called). When Picard when home to France.

Does anyone recall what happened to the bottle of wine his brother gave him? :)

Oh, as for a new Trek, all I can really say is I think Trek going backward is a bad idea. It's starting to sound like desperate fan fiction (just mention Kirk and Spock and we'll get some attention...) for comfort.

I'll wait and see what I hear about it. But I seriously doubt I'll see it in the theater. If it's good enough to make it to HBO, maybe then. :)

When asked about the flute and how much it went for Patrick Stewart just laughed and said it wasnt a real flute. Years ago I could tell you every episode of TNG and TOS but I've kind of lost it. I think all my Trek trivia is replaced with nonsensical 80's sitcom and cartoon info.

Chilli speask to truth, people. Shatner/Nimoy = Kirk/Spock, end of story.

I couldn't agree more! For all the harassment that Shatner has gotten over the years for his acting of Kirk the fact is, if he didn't play Kirk the way he did, with so much energy and excitement, Star Trek would have been just another forgotten canceled show. People make joke at his pauses, and his exuberance but the fact is, he really did make the show what it was.

Nimoy did the same in his role. I had gotten so tired of people saying the problem with TOS was that it was all "Kirk, Spock, McCoy." Yes, it was. And they are what made the show so great.

I can't imagine people playing "younger" Kirk and Spock's in this movie. But they will redeem themselves a bit if they get Shatner and Nimoy to play parts in this movie as their "older" selves. If they aren't in it...it won't be worth watching IMO.

I just heard them mention on the local morning news that there will be a Star Trek 11, and the coanchor actually laughed. She summed it up as what we've heard: it's gone back in time to when Kirk and Spock met (at the acadamy now, I guess?...)

They mentioned there was "hope" they could get "cameos" of Shatner and Nimoy.

*Sigh* This might be one I never even rent through Netflix.

Didn't Enterprise convince everyone that the Star Trek franchise is a dead, beaten, old horse? I have ZERO interest in this.

"Franchise reboot" seems to be quite popular nowadays. Take a franchise that's been beaten to death / that has really started sucking / that always sucked ... and start from the beginning.

BSG
Batman
James Bond
The Pink Panther
Superman (just a semi-reboot there)
....

Some of those have had good results .. some less good. (though the concept, in general, is starting to annoy me. I got so sick of mentions of this being James Bond's "first mission" in Casino Royale. Yeah, got it already!)

I just don't get though why it needs to be done to Star Trek .. something that was based on a pretty lame concept in the first place, and that was totally awesome already the first time around.

Money, money, money, of course, Chilli. That's why the Trek universe has been ruined, quite frankly.

How many copies did Star Wars, episode I sell? On DVD, I mean. That proves to you what name power can do to sell a sucky (bad enough to be used as a torture device) movie.

Yeah I remember that. Quite an attractive woman, too. She was the head of stellar cartogrophy. Because he fell in love with her, he felt comfortable sharing his crappy flute playing and she taught him how to improvise.

I am both a Trek fan AND a Shatner fan. I love his silly singing, and his cameo appearances on TV and movies, and his turn in Free Enterprise, and thank God for him making that piece of shit Miss Congeniality that a gf made me sit through slightly tolerable. Not enough entertainers exhibit the exuberance, passion and humor he does these days. And like Recoil said, that was crucial to Trek, something the newer incarnations completely lacked.
