Dollhouse

Re: New Joss Whedon show

Didn't see that one coming. Good news, though - I've been rather ambivalent to the show in the latter half of the season, not really finding myself very engaged by the story arc or by any of the mysteries. But it's had rather decent standalone plots, great acting, and can always get better with Joss in charge.

Re: New Joss Whedon show

Yeah, I think the idea was that this season would "set the stage" (and stand alone if it had to -- he's learned from Firefly) and then in season 2 they'd get into the real troublesome questions.

Re: New Joss Whedon show

Regarding Dollhouse, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly says:

"...The DVR numbers are a marker and it is a factor. We did see an uptick in ratings. We [went from a]1.5 to a 2 in the DVR plus 7 numbers. That was a pattern we liked."

Similar comments here.

Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said Monday that certain programs with low ratings under Nielsen Media Research's traditional measurement can be renewed if they have strong numbers among viewers who watch those shows on their digital video recorders. One Fox show that returns this fall, the Joss Whedon drama "Dollhouse," fit this pattern, Reilly said during a conference call with reporters. "The DVR numbers are a marker that audiences want to watch something," he explained, adding that "Dollhouse" got progressively better DVR ratings each week.

Re: New Joss Whedon show

Here's a bit of Joss talking about it all.

You pitched season two as being more like the last few episodes of the season, can you talk about that?

The last few episodes we got to play "the man behind the curtain" a lot. We did less of, “And this week, she’s a neurosurgeon!” Which we’ll still do to an extent, it’s part of the fun. But we got into what makes the place tick, what makes it wrong. It was less, “Murder She Was Imprinted to Write.” The episodes were more satisfying and the network responded to that. And we also responded to their ideas about pacing and it being more of a thriller and a conspiracy so they were seeing what they were hoping for when we got the aspect we were looking for.

And given the flash forward of the 13th episode, how will that influence on how second season picks up?

My feeling is we will be paying that off around the – the flash-forward in the 13th episode took place long after where we are right now. So we can be moving toward some of those events which are unexplained. We have a few years where we can do anything we want before it would be weird if we didn’t start paying them off.

Re: New Joss Whedon show

Thanks VL, promising quotes there. So, I assume they're just going to hold the 13th episode to themselves, and work towards it, and then if it still fits, they'll air it at a later point when they think we need more confusion?

Re: New Joss Whedon show

I don't know if they'd air it later what with its going to be on the season one DVDs and broadcast as part of season one outside of the US.

Re: New Joss Whedon show

Dollhouse season 1 finished airing in the UK this past week. We had the thirteenth episode, which may well have been my favouirte of the season so far. Overall, I found the show to be good enough to keep my interest for me to carry on watching the second season. It hasn't hit the highs of Joss's previous works yet.

I think my biggest problem with it is that Joss's shows usually have really interesting characters in them, ones that didn't really need whataver story was going on around them to hold my interest. They could have just been chatting to each other and I would probably still have enjoyed it. However, the dolls have different personalities each week so we couldn't get to know them. The Dollhouse staff were obviously fleshed out a bit more, although Topher annoys the crap out of me (I think it's the actor more than anything), Boyd seemed a bit bland and Tehmoh Penikett isn't a good actor IMO.

I know that sounds largely negative, but overall it was decent enough to keep me around for the next season.

Re: New Joss Whedon show

Oh, I think this show -- if it's allowed to live a little longer -- will prove to be Joss's most audacious product yet.

And the dolls are definitely going to come into their own next season, if the 13th ep. is any guide. I have a feeling this is yet another example of "Joss needs a season to warm up."

Re: New Joss Whedon show

However, the dolls have different personalities each week so we couldn't get to know them.

On the contrary, the true, original persona of the "dolls" is constantly showing hints of itself, and trying to break through. That is a major plot element of the show. We are being challenged to get to know them... :D

That is a good point. But my point was that having them sitting round a table just chatting away wouldn't interest me in the same way that Firefly or Buffy characters would've.

Yup. Gotta agree. I wonder if he will get deeper into the religious implications of being able to wipe personalities and souls etc.

I have a feeling this is yet another example of "Joss needs a season to warm up."

I loved Buffy from episode 1. Firefly didn't need a season to be acknowledged as being awesome. I'll admit Angel took a season to get going (I'm rewatching Buffy and Angel with my wife. I had actually forgotten how rubbish some Angel season 1 episodes were. We're now in Season 2 and the introduction of Lorne made the show much better)

and Tehmoh Penikett isn't a good actor IMO.

Dude. You may have committed B5TV heresey there ;)

Well, I thought that while watching BSG, but thought it might be the writing. But I feel the same way in Dollhouse.

Re: New Joss Whedon show

Ah, but Firefly would have been even better if it had gotten to a second season. What we have is still the warm-up; it was just a very good warm-up.

Re: New Joss Whedon show

I just saw the unaired "extra" episode called "Epitaph One" last night. It was pretty cool and a good supplement to the show. I think its pretty clear they made it because they didn't think they would be getting renewed, and it helped show the outcome of what was taking place in the series, and the impact the characters had. Would have been a good finale of sorts if the show had stopped.

As it stands, it still does help move the story along and show whats really at stake.

There was a line or two in there, when the kids/drifters are going through the memories of Dollhouse employees and flashing back to the Fox Pilot episode. The characters make a smart ass comment like "They have all this technology and they use it as a brothel?" as a joke and a dig to how the show got started. I think its really clear Fox was behind that aspect of the show, not the writers, and they tried to explain it off as "hey it wasnt out idea and yea we think its silly too" in this episode. The show did get away from that as the season progressed, thankfully.

On the other hand, that aspect did make perfect sense: new tech is often first embraced by the porn industry, as I recall. Certainly the internet's had that effect.

Epitaph One (the "extra" episode) could almost be analogous to a low-level War Without End in the sense that we get a glimpse of the future, but no explanations on how we got there -- which will be the fun part. And it's essential for getting the real message of the show.

Re: New Joss Whedon show

Yes indeed! BSG fans: Jamie Bamber (Lee) and Michael Hogan (Tigh) are both scheduled for guest appearances. And Summer Glau is apparently going to be a recurring character, because Joss just can't get enough of her...

I heard about Summer Glau and jamie Bamber, but, not Michael Hogan, cool

Oh, and for those who can stomach it, Kendra Shaw from Razor is apparently on Melrose Place remake <moves out of path of oncoming objects>
