What the negative folks don\'t get (spoilers)

I hate to post this, because it gives the "I hated this movie" crowd more attention, but maybe this will help them understand...

Forgive me if the spelling is incorrect... this is a direct copy from the LOTR sounds page on the Down Below Sound Archive, and Jim isn't exactly reknowned for his perfect spelling.
smile.gif
I've tried to fix it up as best I can, though, but I'm no expert on the Minbari language(s)...

The "Naming Ceremony"...

David: "David Martel. No place in particular. Shok Nor, Captain. I'm looking for something."
Dulann: "Dulann of Minbar. Shok norlaly, first officer. My life for the Shok Nor"
Firell: "Firell of Minbar. Healer. My heart speaks quietly and infrequently."
Kitaro: "Kitaro Sasaki of Earth. Navigation, communication, and translation specialist. I'm just really glad to be here."
Malcolm: "Malcolm Bridges of Beta colony. Infiltration and covert operations specialist. In dreams, I never see my face."
Na'Feel: "Na'Feel of Narn. Engines, environment, and weapons support. I understand, no one else would have me."
Sarah: "Sarah Cantrell of Mars. Weapons and tactical combat specialist. I live to serve and I serve to live."
Tafeek: "Tafeek of Minbar. Political and first contact specialist. I come to the stars by a difficult road."
Tirk: "Tirk, Drazi. I ... carry very large things. I a.. I a... Tirk Drazi"

Now to all you nay-sayers, stop and think about this...
David -- what is he looking for? Did he find it in LOTR?
Firell -- why is she so quiet? Is she afraid to speak? Remember when we thought the same about Delenn, then we found out why?
Malcolm -- he never sees his face in his dreams. Curious line... obviously something he's noticed and has had on his mind more than once. Is it because his training deals with secrets and undercover ops? Or is there a deeper meaning?
Na'Feel -- no one else would have her? In the Rangers? The supposedly all-inclusive organization? Hmm... why?
Tafeek -- what has constituted his "difficult road?"
Tirk -- I have the most questions about this guy. Is he a spy? Is he playing dumb so as to not attract attention to himself? The Drazi haven't been well-known in the past for their ability to play well with others. Or is he just a big simple guy who wants to help people? Was he sent to the Rangers by a family who doesn't want him around? etc etc...

These are questions best answered in ... yup, a series.

See where this can go?

Re: What the negative folks don\'t get (spoilers)

Interesting questions, LondosHair.

I added (spoilers) to the title... I do think that the naming of names ceremony would constitute a spoiler for those who haven't seen the movie. Even if it is in the Sound Archive already.

I thought it was "Shok Na" as in Anla Shok Na (Ranger One)and Shok Na Li.

I was thinking about Tirk...he can't be That dumb, if he graduated Ranger training and all.

Ah, thanks Kribu... forgot about that...

Cern: I believe it is[/b] "Shok Na," but as I said, I'm not too fluent in Minbari and Jim Ward isn't either, from the looks of it.

I'm sorry, but I don't enjoy movies for what they might be if someone decides to make it into a series. I enjoy them for what they are and this one was only average.

I got the impression through the series that Drazi weren't necessarily dumb; they just talk in macros while speaking English (established as the language of business. Convenient, huh?)

Re: What the negative folks don\'t get (spoilers)

I thought the terminology Dulann used was very interesting.

"My life for the Shok Na."

During the trailers, I thought that it was just a shortened form of Anla'shok Na - that he was referring to the One.

He isn't.

He's referring to the one with the title of Shok'na.

David.

"All are one, sworn to the Shok Na."

I don't know about you, but the story ideas are swimming in my head.

Re: What the negative folks don\'t get (spoilers)

I remember the episode in B5 where a Minbari was asking Delenn what they could possibly do with a Pak Marah (sorry about the spelling) Ranger. I got the impression that the Rangers were more of a "Be all that you can be" organization, possibly with flexible standards. They challenge you as you can be challenged.

Tirk may be just what he appears: a little challenged. But his Rangers training might not have been the same as everyoen else's. And who knows, maybe he's great with the fighting and such.

After all, we do have alternatives to College Algebra for college students who have certain learning disabilities. The Rangers may have a similar philosophy.

Got that backwards chief. You see, LondosHair wasn't stating what the movie might be, he was stating what the series might be. And that most of the naysayers (you are included in that elite group) werent really paying attention to what the movie really WAS.

No, i don't think i do scout. Of course there's some interesting ground work for a series, but this was a movie. The movie wasn't great. The ratings weren't great... ipso facto, no series.

I'm not sure they would bend THAT far for Ranger recruits. They were first making DRASTIC changes by letting humans in, which was met with much protest at the time. Then, after the Shadow war and with the forming of the Alliance, they agreed to let all member races add to the ranks (while this was done, I imagine it was met with similar opposition). I somehow dont think they would let the slackers and underacheivers of the races participate just to be 'Politically Correct.' That is more of a human trait in the 21st Century than a Minbari Trait then

Everything about this movie tells me it was written as a pilot, and less as a standalone adventure, so I don't rate it as just another TV movie. JMS and Sci-Fi seem to have a very good working relationship, especially with the success of Babylon 5's and Crusade's ratings over the past year and a half. He hasn't given any indication to us that they have been pressuring him or nagging him the way TNT did (although he did have to come up with a script pretty quickly and was busy with other things at the time). But rest assured that he does know what's going on in the Universe he's created.

Rarely are pilots rated as excellent shows on their own.

Tell that to the people who decide which pilots become shows.

Fine. You've made your points, weak as they may be. It's clear all you want to do is spread doom and gloom about the show, without anything else worthwhile to contribute. There's a word for people who exhibit that behavior. It starts with a T and ends with ROLL. You're getting pretty close to becoming one.

You bring up a good point. Then I have no idea how Tirk could have made it through the training.

Or how the Pak Marah did, for that matter.

Re: What the negative folks don\'t get (spoilers)

They pick which pilots become shows based on ratings and potentional (mostly ratings). And LOTR has a lot of potential

------------------
We're all born as molecules in the hearts of a billion stars, molecules that do not understand politics, policies and differences. In a billion years we, foolish molecules forget who we are and where we came from. Desperate acts of ego. We give ourselves names, fight over lines on maps. And pretend our light is better than everyone else's. The flame reminds us of the piece of those stars that live inside us. A spark that tells us: you should know better. The flame also reminds us that life is precious, as each flame is unique. When it goes out, it's gone forever. And there will never be another quite like it

Re: What the negative folks don\'t get (spoilers)

Is it possible that Tirk isn't just that good in English? Sounds as if he has a bit of a problem expressing himself...

Or he may be a little slow but not necessarily dense; maybe a good and loyal fighter.

How do you know? If you have some insider info on the numbers, please do share. After all, we poor blind misguided B5 fanatics and JMS worshippers are eagerly anticipating such information, and only have your wisdom to keep us in check until the inevitable destruction of the B5 universe occurs. Then we'll join you as we steal Christmas from Whoville and refuse to give our employee a Christmas bonus to help his crippled son, ba-humbug.

Hmmm, you're calling me a troll and I haven't so much as even coughed in your direction... figures. Secondly, "doom and gloom" has nothing to do with it, I'm a realist. Third, you're the one who started this friggin' thread in the first place (supposedly to attract folks like myself) and now you call me a troll for giving the comments that you were seeking all along. Whatever.
