So I think one of the more interesting things about Byron is that he is in an impossible situation. I've never cared much for the character, but the more times I watch the series the more I appreciate the struggle he is trying to overcome. He chooses an impossible goal that he doesn't really deserve, but what else is he supposed to aim for?! It actually adds a sense of realism. In the lore of a TV show a writer might be tempted to create the happy ending of Byron's group deciding to work with the Interstellar Alliance, but not JMS. He gives them an impossible goal that seems like something they would want and he sticks to it despite the fact they will never get it.
