Flash Gordon

Well personally, I think he was having a laugh!

ASyoucan see (especially if youclick on the links earlier, he was clearly having fun. IIRC Blessed actually has a portion of his memory missing following his attempt to scale Everest without oxygen.

What on earth was Brian Blessed doing in Flash Gordon?

He was being Brian Blessed.

Sorry, that's <booming>BRIAN BLESSED!</booming> :D

There are actually a number of big names in the movie. There is a pre-Bond Timothy Dalton, Topol (Fiddler on the Roof), Richard O'Brian (Rocky Horror Show), Peter Duncan (Blue Peter), and Kenny Baker.

Blessed has also had appearances on Blakes 7,Space 1999,Dr.Who and even Star Wars.

As I remember it when I went to see Flash Gordon at the pictures Blessed was the cool character in the film and the "one I wanted to be".

The original black and white series was amazing.Loved the rocketships with sparks coming out their backside and it was still cool.

Brian Blesses IMDB

He has had quite a career. I knew I'd seen him in many things (including the cheesy Flash Gordon movie) some in serious roles and some comedy. He's had quite an interesting mix of characters (from Shakespear to Black Adder).

I was a big fan of Black Adder. Including the last season.

I watched 'I Caludius' last year and Brian Blessed was fabulous in that. His death scene especially was amazing.

I only knew him from I, Claudius and Branagh's productions, hence my surprise. But yes, clearly he was enjoying himself...

That is my first memory of him.

I also saw Flesh Gordon for the first time a few years ago_Ok it is a very soft porn film but worth watching just for the penisauraus

Soft porn? The version I saw was not quite enough to be soft porn. Maybe it was cut on the channel I saw it on.

Soft porn is more the stuff they show on HBO and Cinnemax stations late at night.

And yes, I know about it. I wasn't looking for it, but figured out quickly that HBO can get away (late night) with stuff you won't see on network t.v.

They don't exactly put that in the brochure when selling you HBO. I guess if you like that kind of thing, you'll know when to find it on their station. :)

Hey at the time it was released it would be considered hardcore in the UK

With a Dr.Jerkoff and Dale Hardon how could it really be mistaken for anything but comedy

Never mind the strapons

having watched the new show, i can honestly say i have seen worse TV, not by much but there are worse shows out there, B5 season 1 anybody? it takes itself far too fucking seriously (not always a bad thing, BSG is a good example of this working) without being able to carry of the dramatic elements, and ming the merciless isn't a sneering baldy. however the entertainment factor of the show is multiplied by one thing...Flash Gordon still lives with his mum.

The last thing I'd ever think to do would be to compare B5 with Flash.

B5 was a serious story, with lighter moments. Flash was a no-holds-barred cheese-fest. I almost wouldn't consider them the same genre. One is science-fiction and the other is Ed Wood's type of entertainment.

Like trying to compare Shakespeare to Beevis and Butthead.

i would compare the flash movie and B5 because they are both unbelievable, however i was talking about the show, and using B5 as a reference because we are all aware of the quality issues in season 1, perhaps i should have pointed out that every saga does indeed have its phantom menace.
