How many of IMDB's Top 50 SF movies have you seen?

Re: How many of IMDB\'s Top 50 SF movies have you seen?

I got an even 50%. It was odd to see "A Clockwork Orange" and "Young Frankenstein" on the list, though. I guess I just don't know what sci-fi is anymore.

X2 and M2 - I'm still waiting for the crowds to thin out.

I may have seen a few of the b/w's on Creature Double Feature when I was a kid, but can't really remember. The only oldie I'm sure I've seen was "Metropolis".

I've seen 16 of them. Not even near the 50% mark.

Re: How many of IMDB\'s Top 50 SF movies have you seen?

Below is the (slightly) shorter of the two possible lists, the ones that I have not seen. There are 24 of them.

6 Metropolis (1927)
9 Donnie Darko (2001)
12 Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
21 Iron Giant, The (1999)
24 Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
26 Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes) (1997)
28 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
29 Fail-Safe (1964)
30 Lost Horizon (1937)
32 Delicatessen (1991)
34 Thing, The (1982)
35 Truman Show, The (1998)
36 Cité des enfants perdus, La (The City of Lost Children)(1995)
37 Forbidden Planet (1956)
38 Equilibrium (2002)
39 Incredible Shrinking Man, The (1957)
40 Thing From Another World, The (1951)
41 Night of the Living Dead (1968)
44 Akira (1988)
45 Seconds (1966)
46 Dawn of the Dead (1978)
48 Man in the White Suit, The (1951)
49 Dark City (1998)
50 On the Beach (1959)

The thing is that several of the movies on this list I almost certainly *have* seen. The older movies like Bride of Frankenstein used to be staples of Saturday afternoon movies on TV when I was a kid. That was where I saw the Claude Raines version of The Invisible Man, the early version of Frankenstein, and a few others that are on my "Yes" list. For whatever reason, some of those movies stuck in my memory better than others. The ones that I don't have specific memories of, I put on this side of the list.

Also, I did see the live broadcast, made-for-TV version of Fail Safe a few ago. I just don't have any specific memory of having seen more than clips of the original that is shown on this Top 50 list.

Re: How many of IMDB\'s Top 50 SF movies have you seen?

It was odd to see "A Clockwork Orange" and "Young Frankenstein" on the list, though. I guess I just don't know what sci-fi is anymore.

For me it is quite simple. If it involves speculative science and / or technology then it is science fiction, regrdless of what other genre it may also be.

Young Frnakenstein, just like all of the non-comedic takes on the Frankenstein story / premise, centers on the tech to build and then reanimate (if that is the right word) the "creature".

A Clockwork Orange turns on the technolgy used in Alex's "rehabilitation".

I think both of these meet my above stated criterion.

Yes, you can start bragging. I'll be extremely surprised if someone tops you. I mean, 46/50. Wow. I wasn't expecting anyone to go that high.

34 ... but I don't actually remember all of those I saw very well since many it's been years and I only saw them once. The only one I've actually bought was #8, heh, and at the time I thought it was more a modern-day can-happen movie than a futuristic SF movie (or book since the book was written some time ago). Scarey when you see a "futuristic" movie like ACO and think it looks like today's world ...
