why compare

The ancient and wise Sho-Rin is a professional speaker and obsessive linguist. This said, comparisons are necessary, relevant and fun. What spoils them is laying out absolute statements like "B5 is better." or "Trek sucks." These remarks are volatile and become the horse turds in the discussion. They are statements of faith, not fact.

Mature and educated people learn to avoid such absolutes and fish around for well-reasoned opinions. Personally, I have enjoyed B5 more than any one Trek series. Individual characters, stories, relationships, etc. from both B5 and Trek have entertained and enlightened me. Everybody could be so lucky if they learned how to converse rather than merely spout off.

I don't think that Trek is a bad show or anything, i just don't like watching the new series as much as i did the original Trek. I found B5 and liked it more. The big thing i like about B5 over what all the trek ep i've seen (up to when B5 came on air) was that you actually get to see what is going on in a battle scene instead of seeing the ppl on the bridge saying brace for impact then you see sparks and smoke and you never see what happened outside the ship. That's my main thing between the two of them. But there's good and bad in both just like there is in everything else out there.

I can't say too much about t-cases in 4x4's but i can get into a little about racing gear. I prefer chevy's over fords (i own a 68 Chevelle), but i'll admit that ford does have one plus in it's older cars and trucks that my Malibu doesn't have. It's that nice little 10-bolt rear end. I can't count the number of ppl i know that are running them in all sorts of cars because their stronger then chevy's. Oh well enough of my soap box. The only other thing i have to say is bad about all car companies. For the love of god get rid of anti-lock brakes. I can't count the number of times i've almost wrecked because of them. I hit the brakes, the anti-lock light comes on and i keep on going just as fast.

Perhaps you should get them Fixed.

In my car, when that light comes on, it means there is something Wrong with them.

Comparison is necessary in most forms of human discourse. It is a basic way to convey information about something.

A - "What's B5?"
B - "It's a sci-fi show, like Star Trek, only better"

Of course, that's useless if A hasn't seen Star Trek either ...

I think there is a fundamental statement on the human condition at the heart of this whole thread. This being that we human beings find it hard to relate to something in isolation - we need to use a familiar point of reference in order to understand something

As far as comparing B5 to Trek is concerned, they are two different animals, and any comparison is going to be subjective. I can watch and rewatch "The Best of Both Worlds" but (odd episodes apart) most of the rest of TNG leaves me cold. Likewise DS9, which I lost patience with about midway through S3. However, I have friends who would take the opposite view.

Speaking personally, since B5 ended there has been no show on TV that I HAVE to see every week - I guess I just miss having to bring my brain with me to every episode.

I saw the most recent episode of Enterprise last night. There was nothing in it that you could compare to any episode of B5. It would count as a standalone episode.

In one respect Enterprise differs from previous Trek series except DS9, there is a tiny thread running through the series. It has to do with the Earth/Vulcan relationship and how we see it changing slightly because of TPol. Whether this will continue, I don't know but it is a plus IMO.

I dunno... I still think the George Bush/New World Order/Skull & Bones/Aliens Conspiracy sounds better. Of course my all time favorite was that Steven Spielberg was a disinformation specialist for the CIA trained to indoctrinate American society for the eventual arrival of an alien race.

The Paramount Conspiracy to crush B5 just doesn't sound as sexy as the others, but it has a nice ring to it.
