That's what makes them even more awesome. You think, "How in space could that work?" and then you realize that the First Ones are so powerful they can make impossible things quite easy.
 
Yeah... like flying Mr Potato Heads and glued almonds.

Seriously though... I agree, that is almost certainly the very point that JMS was trying to make... that they had evolved to a point where their technology was so great, personal flair and design by far outweighed the shackles of practicality that the younger races were still bound by.
 
My favorite ship is the Excalibur because I have a small penis.

















Ok, it's really the Shadows.
B5 certainly has the most varied and imaginative ships I've ever seen on TV.
 
I liked that each race had multiple types of ships, instead of it being, "Oh, that's a Klingon ship."

(Except the Minbari. They seemed to have the war cruisers and that's it. But I suppose why mess with success?)
