How many Whitestars are there in the ISA Navy?

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, arial">quote:</font><HR>
From B5Tech.com

The Interstellar Alliance has no true military, the Whitestar fleet and its supporting vessels only consisting of some 5,000 starships - not large enough to be considered a true Military force.
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

The Brakri and Drazi has more ships than the IA.

I got into an argument with a guy over at B5Tech about this. I was sure there were a couple hundred of them. He pointed out there was no Whitestar numbered higher than 100, and how in the one S5 episode when Sheriden sent all of the Whitestars to stop the Drazi from attacking the Enphili, there were only like 25 blips on the hologram representing the Fleet.

Plus, in the Ep when the Fleet flew over the EA headquartes, I slowmoed the tape and counted about 50, give or take.

All that matters is that today, two stood against many. Valor pleases you, so grant me this one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, the HELL with you!”

Eat More Goat.

There's actually over a thousand. JMS states as much in a short story he wrote, involves Garibaldi talking about how Sheriden pressured the EA with a thousand whitestars flying overhead. Now like any good tactic, you do not put all your egg's in one basket. They'd obviously withhold some ships for backup in case things got ugly. They would also need to help defend the colonies, bases etc. they liberated from Clarkes forces. This was also after a few major wars, Sheriden expresses how the whitestar fleet is getting very low in S5. So the original fleet size of the whitestar fleet IMO was around 10,000. Pretty much backed up by 'In valens name', also written by JMS. Which states 20,000 shadow ships, 20,000 Vorlon ships and 8,000 younger race ships. This quote is given with regards to the shadow planet killer scene, which was AFTER the huge battle. Considering it takes 2 younger race ships to equal ONE Shadow vessel when they have telepaths blocking them (stated by Delenn), I'd say the original number there was a lot higher. The 20k shadow ships was from ONE base and there are at least a few dozen, with Morden/Londo dialogue stating a SMALL shadow base has a few thousand ships as well would mean the total shadow fleet would be huge. So the younger races would need every ship they could get, as above they'd in fact need twice the fleet JUST to break even.

Cern - Easily solved by squads. Squad A has a hundred ships, squad B has a hundred ships. And those blips can also represent squads.

Surprise attacks are extremely efficient, the Drazi pretending to be allies could savagely wreck the whitestar fleet before the Rangers knew what hit them.

For comparison: Earth managed to pull together about 20'000 ships for the Line. Given about 10 fighters per one capital ship, this would mean about 2000 capital ships. And one has to remember that the Line took place after a few years of constant losses.

----

One could always say there were exactly as many White Stars as religious caste ship designers could copy, paste and render.

That's right, the actual fighter count for a hyperion is 6 starfuries. Starfuries were used as screens of defense, in retreat (as would be the main theme for the EA to sing to) the starfuries would dely and hold of Nials and Sharlins. They would end up being wasted a lot more than cap ships. This is mirrored by what we see. From what we see of the line (a close up, can't see the whole fleet) there are some hundred Hyperion, a couple shuttles and a handful of fighters. Going by ratios with regards to the 20k figure given by peter david (trusted writer for B5, considered canon by JMS), that would give some 10 thousand Hyperions. Not surprising the EA have so many ships in order to last a couple years against the Minbari when they were slaughtered every time. Having more numbers is bound to slow down the opposition, even if they have a superior advantage in technology.

It's little the same situation with the monks and the technomages in the B5 episodes. There are about 50 monks (?), over 100 mages and apparently about 1000 Whitestars. It seems that they have very little of them because we don't see all of them in a one picture.

Battle of the Line...

Forget the great numbers of hyperions and remeber what and where that battle was...
Everything that could fly and energize a beam was sent there, including shuttles from Earth's surface, fighters from Hyperions (which do carry 6 per ship), fighters from Novas (who carry 24), fighters from nearby bases and every type of support vessel that could fight.
It probably was someting like:
10000 fighters
6000 armed shuttles
3000 small warships
1000 capital ships

WhiteStars...

Who knows? Certainly over 100, certainly not much more than 1000.
The best tool to gauge this is the time between the end of the Shadow War, and the start of the ISA, where the WhiteStars had not much to do, and the EA civil war was on. I imagine most of them were there - and it didn't look like a thousand WS in the battles against clarke's forces... and surely every one would have been there at the final battles against the ShadOmegas, at Mars or over Earth.

The really interesting question is:
Can they build more without Vorlon help? Can the Minbari build more WhiteStars with adaptive armor, electromagnetic shields and self-repair system now that there are no Vorlons looking over their shoulder?

I suspect that Garibaldi was exagerating when he said 1000 ships. He simply means a lot. That fly past probably only needed 40 to 50 Whitestars.

Very unlikely as stated earlier, the Hyperions can only support 6 fighters. They require air, weapons plasma, fuel etc. Since they can't be launched from the planet, there would be at least some 3000 hyperions. Excluding Nova's since we saw I think one at the line.

Shuttles were no where to be seen, there were about 3 in picture at the line. Compared to over a hundred hyperions and maybe a dozen starfuries at best.

We even see bulks from the moon, at that range the cap ships would be little more than spec's unless they grouped up in bulk fleets. Which would mean the close up we see is one of the bulks.

Space is 3D and the EA spans 1,600 LY's at the very least, that's a HELLUVA lot of space to spread out in! The whitestars not numbering much on screen is easily explained by this. Another way to gauge fleet's is population. The EA have a population of 30 billion at the very least, as Garibaldi states teeps are outnumbered 10,000 to 1 by mundanes and Bester states there are several million teeps later on. We know there are 10 billion humans on Earth from Crusade, so that means 20 billion in space. Considering the largest known colony in the EA is Mars, with a population of only 2 million along with the other canon colonies mostly numbering in the hundreds... would suggest there are more colonies than let on. Meaning more colonies to protect and spread out their fleet.

Of course they can, as they build the bluestar with bio-armour and more advanced power source.

Garibaldi is head of intelligence, he got the job for a reason... and he explains as much. To be in intelligence, accurate information is the key. Knowing the resources of his own fleet, when he is helping to rebuild the ISA fleet with his own money would require accurate numbers regarding the whitestar fleet. He is also explained as very obsessive about being prepared, getting all his facts ready BEFORE a conversation in order to get his way better. Why would he exaggerate, there would be no need. If he wanted to get across a lot of ships then why not tell the REAL figure or simply say 'a lot'. No need to lie.

I doubt that VERY much, population estimates are easy to come by. And Garibaldi considered teeps the single greatest threat to society ever, Garibalid is said to KNOW his facts before getting into a conversation. Working out a counter to their counter, and a counter to the other counter... he is predictible like this. Byron says as much and Garibaldi know's it. Also in River of souls, when it involves his interest he delves VERY deeply into information circles to learn all he can. Finding something as easy to come by as population estimates and this for something he PERSONALLY has interest in, in that he believes they're the biggets threat to mankind... I find it extremely hard to believe he would be offhand with his remarks. Also Edgars shared his extreme paranoia regarding teeps and has done YEARS of research to combat that threat, he too would know something as trivial as population estimates. Edgars would then correct him, as Garibaldi was to be his second hand man in the operation. Getting something wrong that any idiot could find is not exactly something you let pass. Especially when this guy is supposed to be specialised in the topic due to his own paranoia about them.

Fact's are numbers, simple, cold numbers. Emotions are expressions of feelings. Do not confuse the two, as Garibaldi clearly states a number (as in fact, unless you can prove it otherwise) but does not get carried up in his emotions. He simply looks at the numbers from one angle and see's it as a slaughter.

My thought on the size of the whitestar fleet is that it is currently around 1000-2000. The reason that we don't see that many at any given time has I think more to do with our tech level, then of stratagy in the series. The amount of time and computer power to render ships is quite enormus and these ep were made between 5 and three years ago I believe. To show a thousand ships flying around would have astranomical costs in both time and money. Therefor we see a few ships and are left to imagine the rest. Secondly, Garabladi could have been refering to strong teeps. A p1 or p2 would not be all that useful to Bester. The 10000-1 number most likly represent those of a p3-p5 or better, which probably numbered aroung a million to two million. This would go well with a population of about 10 billion on earth and about 1 billion elsewere. Jsut my randon thoughts

There is a much more Practical reason for NOT trying to show that many ships at once:

There isn't that much screen "Real Estate".

If you assume a screen ratio of 9 by 16 (HDTV), you get a 1080 x 1920 pixels = 2,073,600 pixels for the entire screen.

Then, you divide the total pixels by 1000 ships and you get 2070 pixels per ship.
A third of those pixels are going to be needed to show Seperation between the ships.
That leaves about 1300 pixels per ship.
That is a little fuzzy Dot on your TV Screen.
If you can afford a High Definition set right now. On a standard set, it's even Smaller and Fuzzier.

So, we won't see fleets of 1000 ships because there isn't any point in showing screens full of little fuzzy dots.

The wording from the story Hidden Agendas by J. Michael Straczynski in Issue 22, April 2000 says

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, arial">quote:</font><HR>
This time it was Sheridan who had remained quiet, listening to the discussion before chiming in with his own thoughts. "We are in a delicate position right now with EarthGov," he said at last. "They've joined the Alliance, but we all know that there was just a hint of pressure there."

"Yeah, I'd call about a thousand fully armed White Stars flying over the capital a
hint of pressure," Garibaldi said.

This was an off the cuff remark, rather than a planned reporting of the facts.
