Fahrenheit 9/11 (SPOILERS)

I had heard the story about the curtains - they cost $8000 - they must have been made of beaten gold.
I had also heard the story about the tortoishell cats [our word for calico]. I thought maybe they were one of those 'only in America' stories that get about. But there's certainly some rather weird folklore floating around about the Bushy gang.
I certainly couldn't imagine Helen Clark or any of our other politcians going on national TV and doing a song and dance routine - they would be laughed out of office.

Actually, Colin Powell, of all people, did a song and dance routine at some international get together for diplomats, in Indonesia, or Malaysia?... recently. They all had to do some kind of a performance. His was, well, embarrassing. It was shown, briefly, on US TV news, but without much detail, thus my foggy recollections.

I heard the story about Colin Powell. My mother saw it in TV and thought it was a joke of some kind. But, I don't think that the Bushies have that great a sense of humour.
And in all fairness I should say that while we don't have our politicians doing song and dance routines in national telly, we do have one or two oddballs. We've got one MP [member of Parliament] who has dreadlocks, wears jeans into the debating chamber of parliament and wants to legalise pot.

Regarding Powell's dance routine -- apparently it's become a tradition at that summit meeting that the last night there's an evening of entertainment, to which the diplomats contribute. Madelaine Albright, Secretary of State under Clinton, sang something when she was there.

So Powell was merely fulfilling one of the lighter diplomatic obligations of his office.

Jade Jaguar,

Thanks to inform this terrible news.
GWB government is really damaging the US society. As some of us has identified polarization is really harming.
It is a shame to see a country that used to be very democratic in point of views, respecting the diversity.
That is a good real life example how Earth Alliance used to behave during Pres. Clark administration.

Slimfast and Aladdin Casino aren't in the business of representing diverse political opinions, they're in the business of making money. The story I read said that the audience booed Ronstadt and that many people in the audience walked out during her performance. Look, I'm a card-carrying ACLU bleeding-heart liberal of the first order, but if I was managing that casino I would have booted her ass out too.

Another version of the same story:

There are some very telling things in this article:
How much weight that carries is debatable, since the bankrupt Aladdin is in the process of being sold to a group headed by Planet Hollywood International Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Robert Earl.
The last act of a man on his way out.

Near the close of her performance, Ronstadt dedicated the Eagles hit "Desperado" to Moore, producer of "Fahrenheit 9/11," and the room erupted into equal parts boos and cheers.

She said Moore "is someone who cares about this country deeply and is trying to help."

Ronstadt has been making the dedication at each of her engagements since she began a national tour earlier this summer, but it has never sparked such a reaction.
That's interesting. Perhaps there was a conservative convention in Nevada no one told her about. :D

And is hearing a singer comment on things that are happening in the world around us really that shocking a concept to Vegas partiers?
Hundreds of angry fans streamed from the theater as Ronstadt sang. Some of them reportedly defaced posters of her in the lobby, writing comments and tossing drinks on her pictures.
And they threw the performer out? That's Vegas for you: whatever you do: DON'T UPSET THE DRUNKEN GAMBLERS!

Yeah, that struck me as kind of odd too, that people who support Bush to that degree would be vacationing in Vegas of all places ... of course I'm sure that Bill Bennett (Mr. "Book of Virtues" himself) gave excellent reccomendations to all of his right-wing Christian friends.

Well a couple things , you right PSIonten about the about the decisions of Alladin and Slim fast have nothing to do with the law and the 1st admendment
but couple things
she has done it before and it has happened to be ussualy the most heated moment in most of her concerts it looks like
The biggest excitement of the night, by a long shot, came when Ronstadt then dedicated her encore of "Desperado" to filmmaker Michael Moore, kick-starting a boo-cheer competition throughout the venue that drowned out her singing and left grown-ups in tuxes and evening gowns yelling at each other on their way to the parking lot.

Now maybe the vegas crowds took it bit far but you have to take in account those same fans all paying a lot more to see this performance than someone poping down to the local music hall, these are probably people staying at the alladin or nearby casino/hotels and has a choice of who knows how many other shows to go to , and they go to this one and get poltics thrown in their face, something they probably don't want to think about while at Vegas.

In Refrence to the conservative convention in all places vegas and the Christian right wing.
Oh come on stop stereotyping the conservatives as stick up the butt christians. And even if that the case Vegas has went thru quite a change over the past 15 years, Vegas has become more a entertainment/ theme park capital of the US, and they put alot of it for fun for the whole family, as opposed to the more seedy sin city past. Hell just look at Times Square , their A freakin disney Store sitting in the middle of time square 25 years ago that would of been unbeliveable, and in the same vein dosen't Disney have the MGM grand casino in Los Vegas too? Family Fun for everyone. Hell I bet Bush supporters even visit such places as Provincetown, MA and espically Key West, Fl.

Sorry, but Vegas just doesn't register to me as vacation spot for the more religious right types (and it just seems that the more forcefully one supports Bush, the more they gravitate toward the religious right). Of course, Vegas is a destination spot for your more secular conservatives, as Bill Bennett proves.

All that is true, but the city's motto is still, "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas".... 'nuff said.

While I would agree that cancelling any more concerts by Linda could easily be considered a reasonable business decision, "escorting" her and her things out of her hotel, at night, seems more than just a little mean and vindictive to me.

I think it pretty funny that the Las Vegas Sun reporter complains thay she didn't do and encore!

I prefered Vegas when it was more honest about its nature. I like gambling but its just creepier to think of some moron losing his kids college fund while the brat's outside riding the rollercoaster. Casinos should be somewhat smokey, whisky soaked and with the occasional leathery boob-jobbed cocktail waitresses who just got a little too old for the pole mixed in with the younger hotties who's self respect hasn't been eaten away yet.

Funny... I just came back from Vegas (have a thread about it in off-topic). I can't even say if it's particularly family oriented or not- it seems like they just have everything sort of smushed together in a big jumble, and once you orient yourself you have to maneuver your way around to have whatever kind of experience you want. Since my gf and I opted for the luxury romantic getaway, we found ourselves mostly in nice theaters (even if some of the content was risque), elegant restaurants and neon ambience. But the casinos are ever-present and the high-stake salon rooms always in sight.

The politics in entertainment thing is always blown out of proportion. Who gives a shit what Linda Ronstadt has to say? I say this both to media pundits like O'Reilly who is convinced that Hollywood is out to control the world and entertainers themselves, who sometimes forget their place. Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world. Not only is Ronstadt's devotion of the Moore naive, but what the hell does it matter? I don't know if she just made a simple dedication or went into a whole schpiel about it, and I don't care. People criticise the entertainers for thinking they're more important than they really are, but ironically are making them so important by giving them that attention. It's a self-feeding cycle of vanity and stupidity.

The Powell thing was for Chinese businessmen or delegates. He was singing to the song YMCA, substituting the title abbreviation with RPNC. *shudder*
And yes, Ashcroft sang. So what? He's got a damn fine voice for an Attorney General.

This weekend, F 9/11's gross passed $100 million, far and away a record for a documentary. It is doing so well, that it is expected to be in theaters until November. So, the DVD probably won't be coming out before the election, as originally planned.

Odd, last I heard the DVD would be released "a few weeks before the election". I have no idea how old or even accurate that information was, however.

Yes, that was MM's original plan, to have the DVD out in Sept. or Oct., before the election, for maximum impact. But, he didn't expect it to be as big as it is, and have as long a run!
I guess that means you'll have to wait longer to see it. Sorry...

On the bright side, I can see it in the theater much more easily now. It began to play about a 40 minute drive from where I live. :D

I am very glad that it is doing so well.
