B5:TLT Actual DISCUSSION Thread

B5: TLT 1.0?
Over on the ISN News forum a fan who goes by Arius on-line posted the following:
Unfortunately Arius didn't include the question that JMS was responding to, which might provide some context. He speculated that JMS might be doing The Lost Tales now because WB was threatening to do a B5 project without him and he was using the "last bullet" he spoke of in 1998. I think JMS was talking about the possibility of the studio insisting on a sixth season of B5, which we know TNT was still interested in early in 1998, which the cast wanted and which could have made WB some more money. I think he conceived an anthology show as a way of doing 22 more B5 adventures without running them in continuity or impinging on the narrative of the already-finished five year arc. (And without stepping on the toes of Crusade, which was also under discussion.)
Anyhow, it is interesting to know that some form of this idea for using the story ideas left on the table during the show's original run was first contemplated 8 years ago when S5 was probably still shooting.
If anyone has a copy of the magazine (Monica) and can provide the question to our Final Jeopardy answer, I'd really appreciate their posting it here.

He mentioned the same thing in a 1997 usenet post, when someone asked him what would happen if TNT really wanted a sixth B5 season. You can find it here. Does that provide the context you were looking for?
It is interesting that he basically has been walking around with the idea that B5 could work as an anthology show, with the original cast as a "repertory group" (the exact words that he also used when talking about TLT at SDCC), for at least almost a decade now.

That's extremely interesting, but doesn't really answer the specific question about the invterview. Just as the context surrounding TLT is very different in 2006 than it was in 1998, it could have been different again in 1997. Ariius has since posted a paraphrase of the 1998 interview question:

I see that in the IATSE, and other listings it is slated to start on Nov. 13th. That is my birthday, and I would consider it a fine birthday present!

That's my sister's birthday, too. Well, so much for astrology. (I hate November. Very expensive, and way too many dates to remember. My parents' anniversary is the 10th, my Dad's birthday is the 12th, my sister's the 13th, a cousin is the 20th, my godfather's is the 27th. I should be getting a volume discount from Hallmark.)

I'm just jumping in here to say that I'm also glad that these are ideas that JMS has been kicking around for some time. I don't know why that should matter; I'm sure anything he writes about B5 today would be as good as stuff he wrote about B5 in the past. But still, something about that just makes me happy.

Well, Amy, your happy has probably got something to do with method of writing in which a writer writes something, then leaves it alone for a while not thinking about it at all, does something else, then later come back to it and goes at it again, and that in doing so clears the mind from whatever hangups one can get initially writing something. Going at a story idea a second time after an initial burst and then a break can make the writing stronger.

No more than the expected number of cringe-inducing mistakes. <g> This went out to the DVD industry press today. Not the dollar figure given is almost certainly for U.S. domestic sales only, at most for U.S. & Canadian sales.
So, who still thinks this might not be happening?
