Top Gear Talk

A shame that it's only 6 episodes this series.. but I imagine they might be kind of tired of it with all the overblown controversies they invite. Seems like people are lining up to be outraged over anything they do. BBC hasn't handled them in the most intelligent manner, either.

I've never seen "Top Gear" but I used to be a big fan of another British motor show - "Fifth Gear".

Their test drivers do some crazy things with the cars, especially Tiff Nidel. The experiments they do are also very interesting.I still remember Tiff doing an incredible 360 degrees spin with a Golf 5.

Fifth gear is all the old presenters who used to be on Top Gear. This is the real thing. I don't drive and am a greeny lefty, but I love this show, they just crack me up. I really enjoy it when they trash nature with a big stupid machine as well. No idea why ...

They do it so you don't have to. Of course some idiots are going to mimic them anyway, but people like that probably would've done something stupid with or without inspiration.

While I am into older cars and performance and all that, I tend to lean towards being an environmentalist without being an "eco-mental". My current car, when I build it, will be fast but it will be a twin-turbo 6-cylinder with a 6-speed stick.. and it's about as light as a 90s Ford Escort. (under 3000 lbs., unlike most newer cars)

I love what they do.. especially stuff like showing that a Prius is garbage, and depending on how you drive it, may get worse mileage than a performance car. Of course, many people don't think about things like that (the message is "it's not what you drive but how you drive it") and just go shooting their mouths off about how evil Clarkson and company are.

Someday I'm going to perform some major experiments of my own on making a different sort of hybrid.. but I have other major projects to get out of the way first.

The Series wrapped up this weekend which will please the Doctor... as it means he can presumably get it soon.

This week featured a showdown between the Top Gear trio (with a twist at the end) and their new German counterparts.

If you know Top Gear... I think you could tell which direction this was always going to head...

cue Spitfires.

There is something about the Rolls Royce Merlin engine that is almost genetically recognisable. I wasn't even born until over 30 years after D Day... and yet I recognise that familiar roaring drone sound of the Spitfire.

We've had the odd one pass over and even do a few stunts (total privilege to have a Spitty buzz your house at an illegal altitude). You just know instinctively that the plane approaching is a Spitfire.

For those who can get the episode in full it's on iPlayer.

the second hammond said not to mention the war i began expecting the full basil fawlty.

"we didn't start it"
"yes you did, you invaded poland"

Who says I don't already have it..?

I don't advocate piracy for the sake of piracy.. but A: I haven't worked regularly in over 2 1/2 years thanks to my sleep disorder and some other health problems, and B: I don't mess around with iAnything. Wouldn't touch anything Apple with a ten foot pole. It's a brand for brand-snobbishness.. and I also hate Steve Jobs more than I hate Bill Gates.

Having been blind in one eye since the age of 12 and acknowledging to myself that I wouldn't be a safe driver with just one eye (my Dad only had sight in one eye and managed to never have an accident in his 30+ year driving history - I just felt I wouldn't be as safe as him) I have never been into cars, but I do love Top Gear. my mind does start wandering when they are reviewing cars, but when they do their challenges, it's worth it.

DL, I think you once said that Jeremy Clarkson is a dick but he knows he's a dick and plays up to it. Which he does rather well.

I wonder if the german counterparts are as idiotic as the Top Gear trio.

I thought all series of Top Gear were 6 "episodes" ... that's why we get two per year, one in the early Summer and one in October/November.

The numbers vary. Also, we're apparently getting series 12 in the fall, if Clarkson was accurate in the ending of the last show.

I liked the Germans. The girl in particular seemed great.

Yeah every time I've seen her on Top Gear I've liked her. she comes across a little bit loopy but in an extremely lovely way. Clarkson definitely has a soft spotfor her if you ask me.
