Jane Wyatt - RIP

Actress Jane Wyatt, best-known to American TV viewers of a certain age as mother Margaret Anderson of Father Knows Best, and to SF fans as Amanda, wife of Sarek and mother of Spock on Star Trek, passed away in her sleep at her Bel-Air, California home on Friday October 19th. She was 96.

Wyatt had a considerable movie carreer in the 1930s and 1940s, starring opposite Ronald Coleman in Lost Horizon, a huge box office success based on one of the best-selling novels of the decade. But it was her TV role in Father Knows Best that brought her the greatest fame. The series ran from 1954 to 1960 - and then remarkably played in prime time reruns, first on CBS, then on ABC, for three more years.

Wyatt earned a permanent place in the hearts of Trekkers and the Sci-Fi pantheon by playing Amanda, the wife of Vulcan Ambassador Sarek, in the ST:TOS episode "Journey to Babel". She reprised the role in the feature film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Ave atque vale, Amanda.

("Hail and farewell" The name Amanda comes from the Latin "Amo", "Love", so it seemed appropriate. D.C. Fontana chose the name because it can be translated as "worthy of being loved" or "loveable". As she said, it seemed a logical choice. :))

Regards,

Joe
