B5 Movie marathon

Did anyone else notice several (5 to 7 minutes) minutes had been cut from each of the B5 movies Scifi showed yesterday?

I noticed scenes were missing while recording the movies to my HD, removing commercials as I recorded. End result was each movie had been cut to approximately 1 hour 28 minutes compared to my "commericals-edited-out" VHS tapes (made the first time Scifi showed the B5 movies) which run approximately 1 hr 35 minutes

Damned shame!
 
I noticed it too ... at least at some points. I hoped at first I either had been off daydreaming or was just remember something from the book ... but I could tell that wasn't the case for all. Damn insecent need for more comercials ... *sigh*

*wonders what this says about B5 on Sci-Fi if they already consider editing out parts for more advertising*

At the rate they are adding commercials it won't be long before we have 30 minutes of program and 30 minutes of advertising each hour. /ubbthreads/images/icons/frown.gif
 
Did anyone else get tired of the constant Captain Morgan's Gold commercial?

Yes, but you have to admit it gets your attention, which is the purpose.

The Tele-movies aren't the half of it.
A few weeks back I remember watching "Revelations" on scifi, and in the scene where Garibaldi asks his second, Jack, a few questions there was something missing.
I think they cut out some lines. Jack said there was a new order coming back home, so Garibaldi asked
"Homeguard?"
"Homeguard, bunch of misfits."

I remember that being there, but when I watched it, scifi had cut those two lines out. I'm very good at detecting the scifi cuts, and this isn't the only show they've done this with. <u>The Twilight Zone</u> gets 2 or more minutes cut off each episode. Now I know two lines about the Homeguard don't mean much, but if they've started cutting some small things, it could very well lead to bigger things. "Once the avalanche has started..."
Anyway, I don't think I was mind wandering when I watched "Revelations". I haven't noticed any other cuts thus far, but I didn't watch much of the 2nd season this time around.

Well I dont see ANY promoting of B5 anymore since it is now in its 5pm EST timeslot, so I cant say for sure...
 
Recoil is right. During the movie marathon they should've done some advertising for Babylon 5, but I didn't see any promos.
Scifi also used to put a few promos on during the graveyard shift, but I haven't seen any of those either.

I suspect Scifi has decided that Babylon 5 is not worth promoting since it is now in the third consective run on Scifi channel. I futher suspect it will become an afternoon staple -- line Quantum Leap -- as long a Scifi has rights to run it.

Bottom line is: It will draw dedicated fans and pick up a few along the way so will have enough viewers to make it worthwhile to keep rerunning.
 
I quit watching the Scifi Channel because they have gotten stupid. /ubbthreads/images/icons/mad.gif

Once they decided not to pick up Rangers, I decided that I wasn't watching that channel any more.
 
I haven't given "Rangers" enough viewings ... but I didn't notice anything cut out of it - but I could be wrong. However, given it is a SciFi made movie and only been shown three times (anywhere) before (and all in under 24 hours), they probably wouldn't be as apt to edit out parts of that as they would be for the other movies, which were funded by TNT and shown many more times than "Rangers". Still, it sucks!

Of course, watching all the movies in a row ... it's glaring with just the presentation differences with "Rangers" ... I noticed it the first time but ... I don't care how they showed an opening with scenes from the upcoming movie, or how each comercial break had upcoming or previous scenes too. I'm not used to B5 movies doing that! /ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

They usually have very definite priorities for what they promote heavily. It's almost always Primetime programs, events like marathons, or movies that are important to them (as B5LR was important for them to advertise back in December and January).

If you think about it, the upward potential of promoting something in Primetime is greater to them than promoting a show running at 5PM that has lower ad rates than a Primetime special or event.

Their number one advertising priority over the last few weeks are the premieres of Stargate SG1 and Farscape on June 7th.

I can't fault them for that. It's where I would put my marketing effort, also. The investment in those programs is high.

Presentation differences? Please clarify what <u>you</u> mean by that.
 
Like I said, how the opening showed scenes from the movie - the coming on theme music when they flashed the credits. The other B5 movies just had the text and didn't show scenes from the movie you were about to watch.

And many times (if not every time) they returned from a comercial break, they showed a few seconds of a scene from the movie. I think TNT might have done with the original movies too when they aired on that channel ... I didn't care for it then either. If you're going to take the time to show something - other than an extra advertisement or two - add more plot or action or scenery shots ... not just showing more spoilers or previews. We're watching the movie, we don't need any more previews for it! At least it could have been a neutral opening and return-to-the-show shots instead of reused footage ... just my opinion though.
 
The movie used the opening credits and fade-ins typical of a series as opposed to a TV movie, presumably to emphasize that this was, indeed, an extra-long pilot episode. That was the producer's choice, not some random act by Sci-Fi. This was not done on the earlier TV movies. They didn't "show scenes from the movie", the presented visuals over music, just like the opening titles in any other series. The difference here, of course, is that they didn't have footage from four of five different episodes to choose from when creating the main titles, as they would with a weekly series.
