Complete list of "cannon" materials?

Re: Complete list of \"cannon\" materials?

Thanks for the list!
I was wondering, however, about the short stories. I know JMS had his hand in some if not all of them... so I would assume these are as well (though the Marcus one I could completely do without.

Not to nitpick either (and this isn't directed at any one person, I have just seen this too many times on the net), but we have to remember that English is not the native language of everyone here... so maybe we should be a little more tolerant of people spelling.

Anything from either JMS or Fiona Avery. (Ms. Avery was the Reference Editor, meaning it was her job to determine these things for a while.)

Also, there's at least one comic, 'In Valen's Name' co-written by JMS. I assume from your last point that you mean stuff JMS posts on the moderated newsgroup, or other comments.

I suppose that at least the three (?) short stories (Genius Loci, Space, Time and the Incurable Romantic and The Shadow of his Thoughts - not sure about that last one?) written by JMS and the one (or was it two?) written by Fiona Avery were covered by the last point on WombatControl's list...

I'd guess they're canon, in any case.

Complete list of \"cannon\" materials?

Hi all- I've been "lurking" around this board for a while and think it's finally time for me to post a question to the membership.

I was, of course, a devout follower of B5 from season 1 but never really got into the stuff outside the series (novels, posting boards, etc.).

Well I'm in need of a B5 fix again and I am wondering what is part of the B5 "cannon" and what is extraneous.

Is there a complete list of what is "real" in the make-believe universe JMS has addicted us to?

---

BTW, any recommendations on where to start would also be appreciated.

Anything else should be considered only partially canon, or not canon at all.

Re: Complete list of \"cannon\" materials?

Books, "The Shadow Within"#7, "To Dream In The City Of Sorrow"#9, The Psi Corps Trilogy, The Centauri Trilogy, and now the Techno-mage Trilogy....

T.V. The B5, Crusade and now Rangers series (knock wood)of course, the pilot movie "The Gathering", telemovie "In The Beginning", movie "Thirdspace", movie "River of Souls" and new movie "To Live And Die In Starlight"....

Comics, There were 11 original comics and then a 3 comic story intitled "In Valens Name", I'm not sure how canon the original 11 comics were but the 3 comic story IVN definitely is....

The 6 short stories in Amazing Stories, I consider them all canon except maybe "The Nautilus Coil" written by Gregory Keyes, the other's "Genius Loci", "Hidden Agendas", "Space Time and the Incurable Romantic", "The Shadow of His Thoughts" all penned by J.M.S. certainly are and the 6th story "True Seeker" written by Fiona Avery is....

Pretty sure that's all the "canon" materials....

Re: Complete list of \"cannon\" materials?

All of the short stories are Canon. JMS did 4 of them, Fiona Avery did 1 and J. Gregory Keyes did one.
They are all canon.

To Dream in the city of sorrows
The Shadow Within (partially)
all 3 new trilogies
everything on TV

Disagree. Unless an English "reminder" is posted in an insulting manner or someone begins doing it Obsessively, I see no problem with passing along a friendly tip about common missuse of particular words.
Learning the word "whet" absolutely made my day! (Another thread.)

That wouldn't have happened if it weren't for a friendly "reminder" (oh, lets get off it, it was a correction, plain and simple!)

Dearest creature in creation
by Tony Bladon

Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.

Just compare heart, beard, and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.
(Mind the latter, how it's written.)
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak:
Say break and steak, but bleak and streak;
Cloven, oven, how and low,
Script, receipt, show, poem, and toe.

Hear me say, devoid of trickery,
Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles,
Exiles, similes, and reviles;
Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
Solar, mica, war and far;
One, anemone, Balmoral,
Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel;
Gertrude, German, wind and mind,
Scene, Melpomene, mankind.

Billet does not rhyme with ballet,
Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.
Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like should and would.
Viscous, viscount, load and broad,
Toward, to forward, to reward.
And your pronunciation's OK
When you correctly say croquet,
Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,
Friend and fiend, alive and live.

Ivy, privy, famous; clamour
And enamour rhyme with hammer.
River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb,
Doll and roll and some and home.
Stranger does not rhyme with anger,
Neither does devour with clangour.
Souls but foul, haunt but aunt,
Font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant,
Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger,
And then singer, ginger, linger,
Real, zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and gauge,
Marriage, foliage, mirage, and age.

Query does not rhyme with very,
Nor does fury sound like bury.
Dost, lost, post and doth, cloth, loth.
Job, nob, bosom, transom, oath.
Though the differences seem little,
We say actual but victual.
Refer does not rhyme with deafer.
Foeffer does, and zephyr, heifer.
Mint, pint, senate and sedate;
Dull, bull, and George ate late.
Scenic, Arabic, Pacific,
Science, conscience, scientific.

Liberty, library, heave and heaven,
Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed,
People, leopard, towed, but vowed.
Mark the differences, moreover,
Between mover, cover, clover;
Leeches, breeches, wise, precise,
Chalice, but police and lice;
Camel, constable, unstable,
Principle, disciple, label.

Petal, panel, and canal,
Wait, surprise, plait, promise, pal.
Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair,
Senator, spectator, mayor.
Tour, but our and succour, four.
Gas, alas, and Arkansas.
Sea, idea, Korea, area,
Psalm, Maria, but malaria.
Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean.
Doctrine, turpentine, marine.

Compare alien with Italian,
Dandelion and battalion.
Sally with ally, yea, ye,
Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key.
Say aver, but ever, fever,
Neither, leisure, skein, deceiver.
Heron, granary, canary.
Crevice and device and aerie.

Face, but preface, not efface.
Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass.
Large, but target, gin, give, verging,
Ought, out, joust and scour, scourging.
Ear, but earn and wear and tear
Do not rhyme with here but ere.
Seven is right, but so is even,
Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen,
Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk,
Ask, grasp, wasp, and cork and work.

Pronunciation -- think of Psyche!
Is a paling stout and spikey?
Won't it make you lose your wits,
Writing groats and saying grits?
It's a dark abyss or tunnel:
Strewn with stones, stowed, solace, gunwale,
Islington and Isle of Wight,
Housewife, verdict and indict.

Finally, which rhymes with enough --
Though, through, plough, or dough, or cough?
Hiccough has the sound of cup.
My advice is to give up!!!

The "Canon/Cannon" mistake is a fairly common one. And not something that many English teachers would cover. So, even for the people who are Native speakers, it might help to know the difference.

After all, if Babylon 5 fans want to be known for our Intelligence, we should at least Try to spell things correctly.

I agree with bakana. As someone who's not a native speaker, I consider it helpful when someone points out a spelling error - either in my texts or posts written by someone else - and does it without insulting the one making the mistake.

For me, this is a part of the learning process.

Besides, English is a language with the most difficult spelling I've ever come across. So it's really not surprising that even native speakers make mistakes. Who wouldn't?

Obviously, I do.

And I am native.

I'll be more careful in the future.
